I used to do the same but it's really unecessary. Last oil change I put 5 and it was 3/4 of the way up the shaded area of the dipstick cold. You lose a bit of power and risk other problems when you overfill it so much.
Really? When I put 5 qts, the oil level on the dipstick is right at the low marker. When I top it off with another qt, I get it up to a tad past the upper marker. You mean like oil hydrolocking?

Not hydrolocking, just added drag. When you find it on the lower marker is the motor warmed up? Is the car on a level surface?

The car was on a level surface. I believe the engine was warm but the oil was cool. I guess when the oil warms up to engine temp, the level would go up a tad more.

I agree. I need right around 5.5 to get the level to full. That extra 0.4 quarts is needed to fill all the oil lines and filter.

Remember to check the oil level after the car has idled for a few minutes, it will go down some.

My car came new with the oil level at the highest mark on the dip stick so when I change oil I always fill to that mark. It does take a little more than 5.1 qts. to do this but I'm comfortable with it. Anyone doing the exact 5.1qt routine would be perfectly fine and it is the recommended amount by Honda.

The oil level goes up when it's warm, not down. All matter expands as it heats up.

My S feels much slower and draggier (feels no power, like engine is not rotating fast) when the oil level was high or a lil over high.

so i drained it and now its fine.

maby im wrong i dunno.

i hope you are turning the car OFF before checking the oil level..

not to mention when you drain the oil you realise you arent draining ALL of it, right? the oil cooler and lines dont drain out completely...

if you are overfilling you are possibly risking the oil level being too high and getting caught up on the crank and frothing up..

oil with air bubbles in it is a BAD idea

Just a thought. When oil is changed, most people will not let the oil drain completly and this does leave a little of the old oil in the crankcase. Especially shops. They are not going to spend 30 minutes allowing the very last drop to drain. In this case, 5.1 qts would be the safe and the maximum amount to have a shop install.
