that's a good point though.... I might need to do a cost analysis of buying a low mileage s2k and 'spoiling' it... it may be very costly to buy one above NADA.

It really depends on what you are going to do with it, if it is a daily driver and you plan on modifying it then don't pay over book.
However, if it is a Sunday Driver and you keep it stock with reasonable mileage, go pay over book, and keep it for a long period of time, you can't loose
I looked for a long time for what I wanted. Found it in Phoenix (I live in Sacramento).2009, 31K Rio Yellow, single owner, bone stock, perfect condition. Dealer had it for a couple of months and it was not selling on eBay or local. I know why: they were thousands above book. I worked on them over a few days and got them down to book and pulled the trigger sight unseen. (Lots of pics and verifiable details) I picked it up 2 weeks later and drove it home. If it was not as represented the deal was off. In writing. I did not mind paying full price for it because I knew how hard it was to come across something that was perfect for me. What was I waiting for? I have not modified it and it is for fun driving. I have another beater for my airport car.

As other posters have mentioned you may have some insurance issues. I did not as I put enough down so insurance was not an issue. (USAA)

Bought my S in Kentucky and drove it back to Wiscansin (lol). Thought she was the one but turned out that it needed a whole new clutch and drivetrain. Thought I got it for a deal but actually didn't. I'm never buying another car more than 200 miles from where I live. Just be patient and the babied S that an old man drives will show up. Regretting buying my S. (Also had some fenders replaced)

I see nothing wrong with paying a bit over aslong as its the perfect color combo you desire, the vehicle has original paintwork, it has been kept up on service and has absolutely no issues, otherwise probably should keep shopping

Your call. I wouldn't buy any used vehicle without an independent inspection. Mileage and rim condition aren't going to tell you everything. There are inspection services that you can use.

You don't have rely on imagination. There's a Georgia subforum:

These comments have been really helpful. Thanks guys!

I've raised my mileage requirement quite a bit. The annoying part now is finding one with 80k miles that hasn't traded hands 5+ times.

I looked at a reasonably priced one a few days ago. Once I agreed to buy it the owner got strangely pushy and wanted me to meet his friend at the bank the next day since he'd be out of town. I ran the carfax and found it has been sold at every dealership in Texas, and the previous owner only had it 16 days :/ This, after he swore he bought it from the original owner.

So many people in the 50-100k market are trying to offload lemons... it's annoying. The search continues

Over the years I've bought a lot of stuff....cars,houses,planes & boats...and NEVER was anything worth what I paid for it.

Either you buy it and enjoy it or sit in the corner and count your money.

Enjoy life! and the car you want.

okay I think I found the car I'm gonna buy! it's a nice single owner 2006 silverstone with 75k miles.

the car has some light racing mods, including a hard dog roll bar. I haven't seen the car in person, but should I worry this thing has been used up on the track?

Worrying is a waste of energy. Have the car inspected by a reputable shop with experience working on S2000s and make your determination based on that.

Some things to consider: if you never plan to track the car even a little bit, then buying a car with track mods may not make much sense. Or maybe you will like the mods for aesthetic reasons. Some people do. Not all track mods translate particularly well to everyday street use.
