Default S2000 Quality

I just wanted to share this experience.....

I was driving back from Sarasota to Tallahassee FL this afternoon. (I had picked up a set of AP2 wheels for my car). We were doing approximately 85 in the fast lane, just south of Gainesville, when a just see this Berlina S2000 screaming by me at around 95. (It had a T1R Ti single with burnt tip). It passed me in the middle lane (didnt see it coming, so I couldnt get out of the way). There was a slower SUV in the far right lane, approximately 100 ft. ahead of me in the far right lane. As the S2000 passes me, and is moving parallel to the SUV, the SUV decides to switch lanes without even a signal. The driver of the S2000 swerved left to avoid a multi-car accident (of which I would have been a part of!). Upon trying to correct his swerve, oversteer kicked in, and the car did a sharp right hand turn STRAIGHT into the guardrail. It proceeded to do over 5 complete rotations off the guardrail and back across all 3 lanes of traffic (came within 5' of my car by the time it stopped rotating ).

I pull over and got the passenger out of the car. The driver's door would not even open! I helped him to crawl across the console and out the passenger's side, with both airbags in the way (quite a feat if you consider just how small our cars are to begin with!). The driver and his friend walked away unscratched! They were both in shock, but not even a bump on the head! I gave the driver my contact info in case the FHP wanted a statement (there were now 6 other cars stopped helping out, including several first responders). ......if this is resembles any member here who just totalled their car, shoot me a PM, or call me, if FHP needs a statement.

The amazing thing about this accident, was that no one was injured, and that the S2000 did not disintegrate upon hitting that rail! I would think that such a light car would take more of a beating than it did.... (well, both half shafts were snapped off, and the right rear wheel was separated from the car....the car was totalled). The thing was, when I pulled the passenger out, and helped the driver out, the interior looked like nothing had happened. The entire passenger compartment was perfectly intact!

I just think this accident is a testament of the quality of our cars (and the luck of certain individuals). I have seen a MB S500 hit the rail like that (at around 100), and it opened up like a tin can (then flipped many, many times)..... no one survived that one....

I just thought I would share this, and if the driver is indeed a member of this site, please contact me if you need a statement saying that it was basically a hit and run, and that it was not your fault.

John

It may not be the S2000's fault, but he was zooming by at 95 mph. That's not going to go down well with the police..glad he's ok though.

I'd rather be in the Merc in an accident.

Judging "quality" by dumb luck is not the way to go.

Many people had VERY serious accidents that walked away. Accident that a Volvo or Merc wont survive. Main reason is, out cars have a tic-tac-toe frame, and you are sitting in the middle of it. Everything will get destroyed in an s2000, except the middle, where you are (thanks to those massive girders.) You would be VERY surprised how well and s2000 will survive over a benz with 67 airbags.
