Is an s2000 right for me?
I had a 98 SS, and I would never go back from my S... but that's just my personal opinion. Don't bother listening to the people telling you not to get it because it's not the same. I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're intelligent enough to realize that a Camaro SS and an S2000 are NOT the same car. (Difficult concept, I know.) It's quite clear that you're looking for something different. That being said, just go test drive the S.
Although both cars are RWD, that's about where the similarities end. Even with the Kenny Brown double diamond sub frame connectors on my SS I still find the S2000 to be a much more enjoyable chassis. It's a lot more rigid and a lot more responsive. It will take some getting used to, but as long as you don't take her to the full 10/10 right off the lot, you'll do fine.
When I used to grandma my SS I could manage 20 mpg combined city/highway, but I found myself using that pornographic amount of torque daily. I remember at times watching the tach and fuel needles moving at the same speed.
The S is similar in that respect. You can drive it spiritedly and still manage 20 mpg, but if you're in VTEC after every stoplight then your mileage will be noticeably less.
The bottom line is that no one can tell you whether or not it's the right car for you. From my experience I can definitely recommend that you check it out. Go find one in good shape and take a worthwhile test drive. Good luck with your search.

First off beautiful car. I always loved the SS camaros, can't wait to see what Chevy does with the new SS. Anyway coming from an SS, if you want a reliable DD that get decent gas mileage and still pulls like a bad out of hell get yourself a 2004-2005 STI.
I honestly don't think you'll be happy with an S. By all means give it a test drive. But it literally is a go-kart compared to your SS. It weights 1000 lbs less, has less power, has a very stiff suspension so you will feel every bump and imperfection in the road. It is a raw driving experience, to put it simply. IMO the SS drives like a Cadillac compared to the S.
Give it a test drive though, its a great car for the niche of driver it caters to. I personally wouldn't give up my S for anything...

Also its expensive to maintain.
abmusser is going to take me for a ride but I think I will like it. I just want something that is sporty, not a honda accord, civic, toyota cam. I just dont want to be another box on wheels. I just feel the s2000 offers the best compromise.
Why did someone say get a 2002+? What does the 2002 come with vs 2001?

I think usually for most people, you're either a torque guy or a "feeling" guy. The S is definitely a "feeling" car. You may or may not like it. My Dad's a torque kind of guy. He used to own a 2nd gen camaro, but he's still grown to the sporty light feeling of the S.
I have an 2001 firebird LS1, 6 speed and an S2000. Both cars are very fun but very different. The S2000 has a very zippy felling motor that is fun to run through the gears (without going to fast and going to jail) and around the corners but it is cramped inside. The firebird is just brute force and corners OK also fun. Has more room inside and a better DD but I still drive the S2000 about half the time. If I had to pick one it would be the S2000 because I also autocross it. In stock trim the S2000 is a much better autocross car. If I did not autocross then the firebird would be the one I keep.
Why are you getting rid of the SS? They cost about the same to drive as long as you keep your foot out of it.
