Alrighteee then - so what else do you Engineer-types do for fun (besides sucking all the joy out of someone else's fun)? It is HIS car, after all, and I think we've now surpassed the point of constructive offerings.....

When was the last time you used a 1/4" drive torque wrench to torque your lug nuts?
Umm - is that a bad thing?

your not changing the spring.

i agree mike, "intuitive physics"
Really? How can I change the spring constant without changing the spring? Magic? Intiutive physics? Wave my fingers at it and shout "abracadabra"?

Stop trying to bring physics, science, analysis, and brain power into this.
Because ... those are all bad things to use!

Sorry, dude, but trying to tell an engineer to "stop trying to bring physics, science, analysis, and brain power into this" is like trying to tell a river to stop flowing. I don't give a damn whether gerby his car as an autox platform, a tow rig, or a stationary power plant. That's a philosophical choice. But physics isn't philosophy -- there are right and wrong answers.

What's unbelievable is that gernby has already demonstrated the right answer in this problem, and people are still arguing that it is the wrong answer.

Well, think about it for a second and you will answer your own question.

Find me a 1/4" torque wrench on the planet that will go up to 80 ft/lbs of torque.

This is true...

And like I said in my post -- I have no doubt that his drivetrain will be able to handle it. That's not the "weak point" in what he's doing. You can be gentle enough to any drivetrain to not abuse it, even when doing the most difficult of things (like pulling his boat with an S2000). It's just that other parts of the car (frame, sheet metal, etc) will not hold up to it for an appreciable amount of time.

God forbid he has to make a 'panic stop' for ANY reason whatsoever. He WILL do damage to the car where the hitch receiver attaches if he has to go from 30-0mph as quickly as possible.

okay,

imagine the house boat on the river attached to the S. yes the house will start to move. they did that with donkeys through locks, and canals.

or imagine, the house on an iced up lake tied to the S. The S is onthe dirt road spinning its wheels in the dirt (only way to accelerate slow enough, with out burning the clutch), yes the house will start to move.

it was a fun discussion. gotta get back to work.
