S2000 Up Against the S4
I was almost going to buy an S4 if I couldn't find a stook for a reasonable price. Too bad the dealer didn't have any to test drive when I went to Audi. I'm curious as how each would feel, and regret not being able to compare the two. If I had known that a simple chip mod could boost the hp up to 300, I would have really considered it more. And, if I were going to pay 38-39k for a stook, I think I would have added a couple of G's in to get the S4. But hey, I got the car I wanted for 32500, so aint all that bad, I love the S.
Hi
I raced one and almost bought an S4 before I found the S2K.
The S4 is about the same in terms of performance as and S2K. It will not walk away from an S2000 like some people think.
Think about it, 250 HP but it weighs 3300-3400 lbs or something. It's gearing isn't as aggressive as our S2K either.
However that being said the S4 can be made to go much quicker.. raise the boost, change the turbo, etc.
Even though the S4 was more expensive the Audi dealership was giving them away. It would have cost me less per month to lease the S4 than the S2K by 100$!

The S4 was my back-up car in case I didn't get the S2000. A guy that worked for me bought one a couple of months before my S2000 came in. I only rode in it once, and there were four of us, but that thing was damn fast!
That's something that the S2000 can't do, haul ass while hauling four people!

Funny story:
on a Sunday afternoon just before Christmas I was at RT's place installing the Proflow throttle body and admiring his cars, including the S4.
On the way from his place on the eastside to Northgate, while merging from 520 to northbound I5, I pulled up behind an S4. Once we were on I5, he punched it pretty good, so I decided to play a little, and kept up with him, then pulled alongside him. We both backed off, then ran again a couple of times, until I had to get off at Northgate.
I'd say the S2000 had a slight advantage each time, but I don't know how hard he was trying.

when i was deciding what to buy it came down to the S4 versus the S2000. stock the S2000 was the hands down choice. but who has a stock S4? chip, exhaust and intake and the S4 is SO tasty.
but i bought the S2000. the S4 was way more practical, but way less fun.
now (as pointed out in this thread earlier) if they sold the RS4 in the states... that would be a tough choice.

stock to stock it would be very close. the s4 does most of it's damage in the low-mid rpms and in stock form runs out of breath at higher rpms. but with chip+exhaust, it's no contest. the s4 then has gobs of torque in any gear and rpm. I think 5.9 for a stock s4 is a little low...try 5.3-5.5. And tracking the s4 in a downpour is a blast. The s2k would've stayed in the garage.
The way i see it, although i have never raced one or seen one run.
The fact that it has 10 more horses but weigh about 600 Pounds more puts it at a disadvantage.
However it being an AWD and having driven and launched AWD cars before, it should make up for that deficiency at low speeds especially because of the low-mid torque it has.
Once you get to higher speeds however, this advantage is lost and the s2k stock to stock should edge away. Even drag shold favor the s2k.
I wouldn't see how 10 more horspower can make up for all that weight at high speeds where the torque advantage is less of an issue. Odds are, as one person said, if you find one willing, it will be chipped...
I have yet to see one, let alone one willing to race.

I don't know. Having tracked both cars, the s4 just seemed to accelerate 100+ down the straightaway much easier than the s2k. However on the street I haven't raced one against the other. But numbers-wise it's probably close enough that the win will go to the better driver. Just watch out for the chipped s4's.
