I doubt you will be owning a car in HK. Unless you live out in the non-city areas such as new territories, you probably won't have a place to park the car. You said you are relocating so I assume it is for work. You'll probably live in Central or something like that. It will be very difficult to own a car, and you will probably never drive it. Even if you do drive it, you'll never go very fast. Traffic is very bad and the freeway speed limit is about 100 KM/h. There are cameras about every 10-20Km which will catch you speeding!

funny stories for the hk folks, i went back to monk kok to pick up some stuff for my S, the seller actually asked me to see i am from out of state. We chatted for a while and most of his customer are from the US because there's only a handful of S2k in hong kong.

there's a white one always parked by the prince edward MTR station, right next to the gas station and there's one by my gf's flat in leguna vista(in hung hom)

to be honest, owning a roadster in hong kong is just..um...kinda useless.
if I have to relocate to hk, i probably will get a used skyline or evo, those are sold cheaper than a piece of used napkin. I went to the underground carshow/car sale place in hung hom and feel like selling my s

I'm relocating mainly due to career reasons. It's not necessary to have a car in Hong Kong, so the company won't pay for it. I believe I could afford a car if I really want to have one, without having to live in a terrible life.

Income tax rate is lower there for me (capped at ~16%), compared to the 37% or higher rate that I'm paying in the US (remember there is sales tax here, so your effective tax rate is actually higher than your tax forms say). I'm not a US resident, so I don't have to pay US taxes the moment I move out.

[QUOTE=addisonc,Feb 22 2007, 04:21 PM] LOL, $350/month about the price of some rentals in the rest of US.

Register it in China, then drive it to HK. Cars are LHD in China.
My uncle did that with a Camaro.
haha I love this idea. But then, it would be so inconvenient whenever you go through parking lots and tunnels, since you are on the wrong side of the car ...

I would love importing my 05 USDM AP2 there ... but just doesn't seem very feasible given how difficult it is. I love my color combo and how the car car runs so smoothly mechanically ... and the fact that I bought this car NEW.

I would probably have to opt for a used on there, or have to shell out 500K for a new one with the VSA and stuff.

i thought of the same when i first relocated back five years ago...but there is actually plenty of places to drive the car fast here...traffic in HK is no worst than downtown Toronto...I go back to TO every now and then to visit my parents and I personally find the traffic downtown absoultely insane and much worst than Hong Kong...In Hong Kong if you go slightly further out from the reallly crowded places, is not too bad at all..

As for speeding... a radar detector is never a guaranteed weapon (but it is actually legal here) so that helps a little bit and have saved me many times..Got both Valentine and Escort 8500 and personally find the Escort works a little better here in town...

I now have 39000km on my odometer and that is two years and 3 months old and i drive it everyday....plenty of places to go cruising..... and honestly traffic is really not that bad but parking is expensive as everywhere you go you have to pay parking...but that is the same in most big cities in North America anyway...

But for sure owning a car here is a luxury, as taxis are so cheap compared to North America...but once you are used to having a car (like me)....is damm hard to go back to the always crowded subway and buses........

Traffic is not THAT bad, but theres enough of it you don't get to drive fast and weave in and out like you might in other places is what i mean.

Yes, the cameras are also HUMONGOUS so you can always spot them before they can spot you, but they are often enough that its not even worth it on the freeway.

But yes, parking is a bitch, and usually parking will cost you more than a taxi would depending on where you live.

A nice place to LIVE is expensive in Hong Kong. I went on a tour of a new building flat of about 700 square feet, and it was 1 mil USD. Haha the funny thing is that I missed a 0 in that number and kept telling people the place wasn't expensive.

I would love to go driving in Hong Kong. I didn't look into seeing if my US driver's license worked or even if they had nice rental cars.

But A LOT of the cars that are on the road are luxury cars (excluding public transportation). And I don't think I saw a single pickup truck.
