Default S2K bubble?

I know used cars are hot right now but d@mn! The prices on S2Ks seems to be rising at a crazy rate? What's the deal here? Three years ago when I bought mine, a AP1 with > 100k miles asking price was around $10K-$11K. Now, I see people asking for $15k+. How much is a 03 SSM/Black with 78k worth? lol.

Can anybody point me to some actual analytics too look at?

Just kind of crazy the prices I am seeing...

Neighbor, firefighter, just bought a new Tacoma off the dealer lot. A 2 year old Tacoma was selling for $400 more than what he paid for the brand new one. Even the salesman said it was nuts.

The S is one of the last real manual sports cars that is a real sports car and not controlled to death by computers. Does not even have some nav system. Pretty easy to work on. Nice trunk size for get always. Transmission is beautiful and the engine cannot be beat. Not as expensive as the manual air cooled P cars it seems everybody and their mother wants.

I have a great time driving this car especially top down on the many roads Northern California/Oregon/Washington/Nevada have to offer. Wife and I will blast off in the thing just for the joy of the drive and going someplace scenic. Not to mention a nice B&B.

The used car market in general is high these days... because of demand.
Heck - the price of EVERYTHING is up. Have you seen the price of a 2x4 lately?
But even with that being said - the S2000 has been seeing values rising across the board for years now.
They don't make cars like this anymore... people want them...

You should try Oz..
Currently advertised, with only 9 for sale in the whole country.
2001, 97,000 miles A$36,000
2000, 76000 miles, A$43,000
1999, 42000 miles, A$52,000

I wonder what my mint condition, 2001 with just 31,000 miles is worth.

Artificial COVID inflation/bubble.

Just like Mr.Funk said, the price of lumber is up 175% - trying to run a construction business is chaos.

I think its value will fluctuate with the larger economy as a whole but will continue to be valuable. It's a desirable, iconic car that they certainly are not making any more of. It's still a fairly "modern" design with a legendary high-revving NA engine that will likely never be replicated again. On normal downturns, I bet its value rides the standard market's. If things got really bad with high unemployment/bankruptcy, that could decrease values significantly for an impractical second/third car.

I think its a collection of "they don't make cars like this anymore" and combined with Rona insane prices for Wood, GPUs, used car prices, etc... I sold my 17' s550 GT Mustang early last summer and it actually went up a few thousand since then.

Your choices for a new Convertible Roadster these days is a Miata, Z4, F-Type or Boxster.
All expensive except Miata new and not a fan I'd rather have an S2k.

Popular Japanese sports cars were starting to rise in value even before covid hit. NSX, Supra MK3 and 4. MR2, RX-7, s2000, 240z etc...

And that is if you can find one in decent shape. Most older cars on that JDM list were molested and not well taken care of.

i sold mine a few years ago and have owned a few cars since.

sold 04 with 144k, track prepped.
bought 05 gti, fun but not reliable. sold
bought 2019 CTR, handled well, over heated, numb to drive sold
bought tesla model 3 Performance, fun, great daily, handles well on track but charging issues (still own)
bought 2005 s2000 120k still as fun as i remember, reliable, low operating cost, easy to work on.

I thought about a P car but operating cost and reliability put me off. Fun for a weekend but not sure i would want to track it.
With more and more s2000 getting crashed, the market is slimming down so prices are going up.

My local Honda dealership allows their mechanics do some freelance work after-hours in the shop. The guy I use to work on my S (after-hours) has been a mechanic there for many years and he has previously owned 2 S2000's and loves when I call. The owner of the dealership saw him working on my S (just a complete 6-fluid flush/change) last year and wanted to know if I wanted to sell it. It's a 2004 with 35k miles....I'm the original owner, it's 99% stock and a 9.5 out of 10 inside and out. The dealership owner offered me what I paid in 2004 in cash.....or $5k on top of that towards a any new Honda. That was in April/May 2020. He said he wanted to make it the centerpiece of the showroom and personally drive it from time to time. Go figure. Sorry, not for sale!!
