Well, I'm done with test driving all the competiton, and decided I'm going to pick up an S2k. The only thing in the pricerange that came close in the fun-to-drive department was Mazdaspeed Miata.

Now to begin the search! I'm holding out for a CPO GPW or Suzuka Blue, might be a few weeks till I find something relatively local. I'm leaning towards '04/'05, drove the throttle by wire, and prefer the feel of the old fashioned mechanical operation. Ontop of that, aftermarket support is very important to me, and it seems there's a bit more available for the pre-'06 cars.

In the meantime, I figured I'd start surfing the boards, and ask a couple of questions. My biggest concern is with winter driving. How does this car do with good winter tires on it? I used to own a Boxster S, and didn't have trouble with it in snow, when I had winter tires equiped, should I expect the same from an S2k?

 

We've heard good things from Canadian members, about how well the S does with winter driving on snow tires, but this all depends on where you live? If you're south of NY, chances are you won't even need winter tires.

 

Mine has gotten me around Milwaukee for the past two winters-- Nokien Hakkapollittas(sp?) all around makes it happen. This winter was pretty crazy in terms of snowfall and it did just fine. Good luck!

Definitely glad you chose the much more masculine S2000.

 

Does great with good winter tires. Some run Blizzaks, some run M3s. Nokian, too.

If you want more safety: For ~$1000-1200 you can add traction control to pre-06 MY.

Racelogic sells a unit through Woodhouse Dodge.

 

no problems in the winter.. but snow tires are an absolute must.

 

Thanks for the replies folks. Think I found a good car, CPO Suzuka '05 with 4,000 miles for 24,500. Going to check it out right now!

I'll be sure to invest in some winter tires when the time comes. I actually find it easier to drive in the snow without TCS, but I appreciate the info on Racelogic.

Winter tires on S = Awesome.

Drove it all last winter DD in some pretty remote places. Got stuck once, but so did the 4x4 blazer with all-terrain tires next to me so I didn't feel too bad. Tractor got us both out in a hurry.

You'll love it man, don't be shy about the snowy weather and the S, just go lighter on the throttle. It does great even when you're a little generous with the gas pedal
