S800 Road & Track June 2007 Issue
Guys:
I finally got the mag and read the article. I became very apparent to me that this is nothing more than "another car mag prediction" with a "photoshopped pic" that car mags sometimes use to fill unused space. In the copy, there is a total lack or "sources" for any of the info there.
I wouldn't lose any sleep over this.

IBTL, although I think this won't be granted the recognition of being locked. Worthless magazine filler...
Everyone knows Honda has tighter lips than a 40 yr old virgin nun. Whatever they have in store for the car will not surface until it is absolutely official and until Honda wants everyone to know.
As far as the advertisement, the S2000 was never granted the visibility that it should have been. It reminds me of the Prelude at times. Both are vehicles that people to this day have trouble recognizing. I can't tell you how many times I have told people that S2000s have been around since 2000 and they have responded with disbelief. Perhaps that, along with virtually no "real" changes (power increase, redesign, major innovations) are what caused our special cars to head to its imminent demise.
Honda- just drop the axe already and stop making the car. Each year you prolong production is another year the value and "special-ness" of our cars decreases. There can be no replacement for the S2000, so stop trying to tie the S2000 to whatever you guys are cooking up.

you can see that their prediction of a S2000 Type-R was some what correct except that it seems to have manifested itself as the CR instead. This was posted 1.26.07 well before any thing was said about the CR. I have a feeling that this car or something similar to it will be the future of the Honda convertible. It is obvious that Honda does not want to compete in a HP war to keep the S competitive with the Porsche or BMW. Think about it, if Honda were to pull 270 -300 HP out of a compact engine ( keeping the balance of the current S) the S2000 would be really great on the track against those cars. Its is not the handling of those cars that makes them faster, rather their HP advantage. With that being said it is obvious that if Honda wants to stay in the convertible market then they will most likely compete were their engines make the most sense, against the Miata.

Even if Honda Motor Corp were to make an S800 that's lighter than a Lotus Elise with hp/L ratio of >120, American Honda would stay away b/c of dimunitive size and low HP (regardless of the power ratio) relegating the car to the Japanese domestic market of kei cars only (like the Beat and the Cappucino).
Whoa!
I never said R&T was never correct. When they say a manufacturer like Honda is in the process of building something like the S 2000 CR, one can believe them.
But this article on the "S800" was not of that caliber. It was pure speculation. Actually, the S800 looks rather like a Civic convertible --- which it may turn out to be in prototype form -- and not any harbinger of things to come for the S 2000.
