safekeeping the car
I only have an outdoor driveway on which to store my car in an extremely yuppie neighborhood (which means it's constantly being cased by thieves). We suffer at least 6 car and home break-ins and 1 stolen car per month. Most of the cars have been Camrys, Bimms and Mercedes but I'm afraid they'll soon figure out the pleasures of the S.
I have an AutoLock, the one that locks the brake pedal or clutch and the stock alarm system. I don't think the alarm amounts to much as most people have become de-sensitized to all the false alarms. Furthermore, I travel extensively for my work and wouldn't be home to wave my Sig Sauer at them even if the alarm was to go off.
Come people have told me that the AutoLock is better than anything else on the market, but one installer told me that they've figured out how to twist it into a driveable position. I've tried it at 50% force (I routinely bench 280 lbs.) while trying not to misalign my pedals and found it to very sturdy. However, I'm realistic enough to know that the thief wouldn't give 2 hoots about my pedals as long as he can drive off w/ the car.
Have any of you figure out a way to limit your S from being adopted into a bad home? Please share your wisdom.
Thanks.

Club for visual deterrence? Car cover to make it less conspicuous (although some might argue the opposite).
Beyond that I don't think you can do anything but prepare for the worst. It might be worth investing in some sort of videa system; perhaps you can make it work on motion sensors so it only kicks in if someone's near the car.
A lojack?
Have a neighbor who's willing to call you immediately if they notice your car is missing unexpectedly?

Bottom line, if someone really wants YOUR car, they'll find a way to take it. Same with if they really want what's INSIDE your car, they'll find a way in it.
Here's what's worked for me:
1. Keep as little inside your car as possible. That means no bags, no clothes, no cell phone/radar detector cords, or anything in sight.
2. Park in well-lit areas.
3. Keep it on the down-low. If you have a nice stereo, keep the volume as low as possible when coming and going.
I would also advise that if you're going to leave your S for a long period of time, such as when you're traveling for work, try to find a friend or relative's garage that you can store it in.
Good luck

Thanks guys.
A friend of mine's Porsche had Lojack on it and they were able to recover the unit (Lojack) plus a few parts left off of his car at a junk yard.
Already have the car cover on to protect from the snow and rain and I never leave anything in the car. some convertible owners say to never lock the doors b/c the roof repairs outweigh the cost of your HU. What's your thoughts on that? I just don't want some wino sleeping inside my car while I'm in a restaurant somewhere.
My friends who do have garages either have junk or cars already in them.
I came across this device http://www.awdirect.com/awdirect/catalog.c...tion&linkid=127 which is like a parking boot, the kind they use when you don't pay your tickets. Looks like it might have potential for when I'm gone for months overseas. Kinda feels weird to self-impose a boot on your own car though.
I know nothing's 100% secure but I want to minimize my risk or at least make the parasites work a bit for it!
