On a strictly street driven S, yes. I don't think the added danger of serious injury in minor accidents (from your head hitting the roll bar without a helmet) is worth the gains in roll over safety you get from the roll bar.

Just go look at the S2000 crashes thread in here. Most S2Ks that roll with no roll bar are still safely supported by the windshield frame.

I'd only install a roll bar if I had to do it for track use.

Lots of debate on this subject. Way too many past threads ended up inconclusive. Have a read through of them and you'll see what I mean.

For a street driven car? No chance. If you think you'll get in an accident where you will flip over on the street....well, you may want to re-evaluate your driving skills.

Even on the track, most of the time it's not necessary. Many people do it because of regulations. The car is plenty safe without one, which is why Honda released the car that way.

Depends on what kind of seat and restraint you plan on running.

My mother asked my father to install rollbars in the 1971 MGB I was to inherit when I turned 16 many years ago....

He said, "If he does something so crazy in the MG that the roll bar is required to save him, he shouldn't be on the road".

Unfortunately the engine went to the grave a few months before I turned 16.

I would want some sort of rollover protection if there wasn't any (a la Miata). But in stock configuration, the factory setup of the S2000 is pretty safe.

I've never heard of an s2k injury or death that was blamed specifically on the convertible top or lack of a rollbar. All of the deaths/injuries I've heard about didn't involve a rollover, just hitting stationary objects at high speed.
I've also never seen a picture or heard of an s2k rollover where the windshield frame collapsed or the roll hoops failed.
But a full rollbar makes the car look so mean and purposeful, I'd choose a rollbar for a cosmetic mod over a body kit, and it gives you the option to track the car in the future when the bug hits you.

You could put a big wing and some hella flush wheels while you're at it.

Track mods for street-only cars are kind of poserish IMHO.

GET OUT ON THE TRACK AND DRIVE!!!
