Saving gas in your S

I still need to plug in my Scangauge to the S2000, but I can tell you that the difference in MPG when climbing a hill in 5th versus 4th at ~55 MPH in my Accord is roughly 25%! Holding steady at ~55 MPH at 1800 RPM you can get roughly 20 MPG while climbing. Trigger a kick-down with the throttle, return to 55 MPH (grade-logic transmission holds 4th), then let the gauge settle, and it will read roughly 15 MPG. Nothing has changed but the RPM.
Higher RPM's might FEEL better (less bogging), might be more RESPONSIVE (more available power if you punch it), and might even take less physical pressure on the throttle when cruising, but the actual gas being used is higher. All else being equal, open throttles and low RPM give better mileage than less open throttles and high RPM. Hard to wrap your head around initially, but any hypermiler with a 1st-gen Honda Insight 5MT will confirm it. Throttle-body losses and powertrain friction account for most of this.
Of course, to get back the OP's topic, this is a sports car. So you really should drive whatever way you're going to most enjoy it. Saving gas can be fun if you work at it, but not everybody would agree!

During a trip to Texas this past week, I averaged no less than 30 mpg on the highway while cruising between 70-80 mph, which was the speed limit for most of the route anyway.
I even got 35.4 mpg while cruising at 70-75 mph for 400+ miles straight. I was very happy that my car was able to pull off such great gas mileage...
Until Stacey hit variable valve timing and electronic lift control and made me remember what I was missing out on.

If you want good gas mileage get a second car that gets it, but if your trying to get it in the s.....that is just a crime against man kind or something like that! I am lucky to break 23mpg when I go to fill up! The s2000 should be driven like it was built!!

Over the course of 4 months my car averaged 26MPG. I would always top off around 11 Gallons and fill around 280-320 depending on how much freeway cruising I did.
I would MUCH rather get 26MPG in a more enjoyable car to drive like the S2000 vs. 32MPG in a plain jane Civic that would bore me to death during a commute.

Wow you get that much im lucky if i get 200 to the tank i cant resist da urge to vtec and the invidia doesnt help i like how it sounds in vtec
For those of us that daily drive the car, I can't imagine redlining the damn thing every day and never did. So because the car is titled as a "Sports Car" it should be driven like you stole it 24/7?

Um no, you drive it based on the circumstances of your ownership.
I drove it like I would any other car 90% of the time but reserved that 10% for Vtec when I was in the mood. Other than taking corners considerably faster than other DD's, my S2000 was no different from rolling around in a Civic, just more fun that's all. I mean we're limited to obeying laws/speed limits so...???
People on here just over exaggerate EVERYTHING about the car.
