Default Second S2000

I have noticed that a few people have sold their first S and replaced it with another, usually newer, S. I am curious as to why. The S has not had many changes since it was introduced so in essence these people are replacing the car with the same one. At the same time, the original one couldn't have been more then two years old.

To those of you who have done this, why? Is there something that happens to the car as it gets to be two? Did you get tired of it, only to want it back after you sold it? I am curious.

I see that you have 2002 and it may not be apparent to you how much more refined and better model year 2002 have become. One of the most desirable reason to switch to 2002 is the change of rear window from plastic to glass. If you lived with the plastic window you would know how horrible it is to live with day by day. Not only that have you ever drove the first year 2000? The decel clutch buzz is quite startling and I know TSB is available to fix this but why go through this when all the fix is already done from the factory?
I own first year silverstone but the new sebring silver looks really great, if I haven't gone to far modding on my car I would've traded mine for the new sebring.

Also not too long ago, you have to understand how well S2000s' held their value, so when you traded in you hardly loss money at all. It may not be the same now but it totally made sense to trade past model to newer 02' model.

A lot of what you said makes sense. I never realized that the plastic rear window was such a horror. I had an old MG with a plastic rear window but for some reason I never had the problem.

I feel very much the same way that you do. I too become attached to cars like the S2000. That was the reason for my question. Feeling the way I do about my S I wondered why people would sell it only to buy another.

Ralper-
We sold our '01 S2000 b/c we had 4 cars for the two of us, including a '98 Z28 Camaro that we had about $15000 in mods invested in. So, we were unable to drive the S2000 as much as we wanted to.
As for a couple of positive changes that were made besides the rear glass window (MUCH better) and the tweeters in the door---We had installed an aluminum dead pedal (2001 was plastic) and ordered but not installed the leather console cover to replace the carpet on the console. And both of these items are stock on the later year models.
Our original car was black with red interior--I loved it, but there were many more toys in the garage.

I traded my '00 Berlina Black for my '02 Sebring Silver. Lots of reasons I guess.

First off, I had no "true" intentions of trading, but after attending last year's Fall Colors Tour, I visited my family in New Jersey.

Once I arrived, my cousin was excited to show me his new Civic Coupe and told me that the local Honda dealer had 5 new S2000's. Thinking that some of them could be '02's, I was very interested in seeing them. Unfortunately, they were all '01's. We then took a drive to another dealer (Planet Honda on Route 3) and what I initially thought was a Grand Prix white turned out to be a Sebring Silver Metallic in the showroom.

It was instant LOVE! I just wanted her. With the little issues I had with my old S2000, it just made sense to trade up. What were the issues?
  • 2nd Gear grinding resulted in New tranny at 16k miles (under warranty but I had no S2000 for two weeks)
  • Complete replacement of pressure plate and clutch assembly at 35k miles (again, under warranty)
  • Constant wheel vibration after 50mph

And there was more, but I don't want to continue. I got good money for my trade and I've been so happy ever since.

So, in all, the rear glass window and the new silver won me over. In all, the only thing I miss from my old S2000 is the red seats!

The day of the trade. . .

Hi Guys,

I haven't had my S for that long, but are you guys with < '02s aware of the vinyl products which are supposed to clear up your window?? There are some satisfied stories in the wash/wax forum, if you do a search...

Personally, I think the < '02 plastic window wasn't too bad (though I do prefer my glass). It's certainly bigger than the glass, and that's a . On my Miata, I always had plastic, and the best thing I ever did for that car was get a three window top... In my opinion, the S's top is just as claustrophobic as the original Miata... When eventually time comes to replace my S's top, I hope a three window is available aftermarket.

Oh, hey, that carpet on the console was a real Honda oversight. Nothing a little aftermarket work won't fix though!
