I found out that it works in the "secret compartment" by accident... I had locked up my EzPass in the compartment and didn't want to pull over and unlock it... so I went through the ticket toll lane... and the lady asked if I had EzPass... because it was detected!
So, the only change I made to the EzPass in the secret compartment is I used the velcro to stick it to the compartment's door (business side up of course)... Now it works AND doesn't make noise in the compartment as it bounces around...
Don't forget: the EzPass detector is a flat-shaped receiver directly above the car (look up next time with the top down)... so as long as there is no major steel between that path, everything works great...

I put my FasTrak transponder in the secret compartment 6 months ago and it's worked perfectly. I velcro'd it vertically on the front wall of the compartment. It's great to not have it on the windshield.

Oops, it did not work on the Reston Pkwy exit!
It worked everywhere else, so I am cruising at 40 plus, the first car goes, then I go and the darn gate starts to fall! Missed the gate, but not a confidence building experience.
The Smart Tag reader probably needs more time when the receiver is in the compartment than if on the windshield.
So from now on I will slow down as I go through the gated tolls. Better safe than sorry.
