Default Secret passenger door compartment

So, pulled off the door panel to see why my passenger window switch wouldn't go down... seems it must have been taken off by the previous owner as one of the pins was bent on the connector... straightened it out and we're back in business.

However... I noticed towards the lower rear of the door there is an interesting plastic insert on the panel... maybe 10 inches by 6 inches... and a corresponding pocket in the door liner where it goes. It doesn't have any obvious purpose... seems quite a bit too much to be interior bracing... almost like it could be for a 6x9 speaker if the door panel had a grille.

The secret 'box' is screwed on... doesn't appear in the service manual... and might hold a kilo of coke if you wanted to take the door apart every time to get at it...

Hmmm... maybe now I know why my door panel had been taken off before... I'm assuming there is one on the driver's side as well...

Anyway, what is it for?

There appears to be a LOT of these... Behind the seats, theres "vents" that allow air to depressurize through the car that could have easily been made into a small compartment (goes into spare tire/fuel filler neck area). In the passenger side under the dash, there could easily have been a decent cubby instead of the little one given for the 06+. The space in the 00-03 'faux vent' appears to be made ready for fog lights...

etc. I think they were planning on giving it more options but decided against it to keep costs down.

Yeah I always wondered what they were intended for, but who knows. Most people just mount their crossovers in them when they get upgraded component speakers.
