I think the main benefit is cost. The '94-'97 Miatas are priced really well these days, and you still get the 1.8 liter engine.

Personally I prefer the first generation for some odd reason, but that's beside the point. From a driving dynamics perspective either the first or second generation cars feel pretty similar. My aunt has a 99 that I rail on whenever I'm down in California, so I have plenty of seat time in both.

The only real "benefit" to the first generation (90-97...there was no 98) is that the earlier generation cars were lighter and if you decide to get really frisky you can convert the earlier generation cars to a Spec Miata down the road. For more info on THAT option check out www.specmiata.com...

Well, the other benefit is that they are cheaper than the second generation...but if you think the first generation is ugly to begin with it's probably not even worth considering.

as for M1 versus M2... it really is a style-preference thing. the dynamics and performance are similar. i just think that the front end of the M2's look like every other car on the road. the interior of the M2 is much, much more refined than the earlier models. fwiw, i traded a '93 after one year because the '94's were THAT much better. rigidity, brakes and power.

as for the condensation on the windshield... i can understand i, given the wet weather we've been having, but i'd pay attention to the seal of the roof against the header. i never had any problems in ten years and three miata ownership. the top has been in production since the first year, with very few changes aside from the glass window, so mazda knows ho to make a good top and mechanism. the other possibility is that the vent was left on "fresh", which is not advisable as critters and debris will make their way up into the system.

From what I understand, the humidity problem in the M2's is actually because the car is pretty tight and air doesn't flow when it's just parked.

I have had humidity problems in my car, but it was because the drain holes in the bottom of the rocker panels were plugged and the rockers were filling with water and causing increased humidity and condensation in the car.

I would venture to say that if you run the car until the condensation is gone and drive the car regularly that this won't be a problem.

I wouldn't get a type-r. It's not reliable in the sense that when u go to start it in the morning, the car isn't there.

Those things get stolen left and right. The insurance is almost as much as on the S2000 from people I've spoken with. It's ridiculous!
