SEV Power - Are we overlooking something in the US?
The following message was sent directly to them:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear Sir,
There has been much discussion (and doubt) as to the effectiveness of the SEV system.
See Thread:
https://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.php?...&threadid=24243
We would like to conduct a test (via several timed 0-60 and 1/4mile runs) with and without the SEV system.
Would it be possible for you to send a sample (1 piece) of your SEV system to us for testing. The unit will be returned within 3 weeks time of receipt.
Thank you for your time,
Aaron Martin

Proof's in the pudding... if they are willing to send one, we'll test it out and post results. I'm interested in seeing their response.

It's good to have an open mind, guys, but don't have it so far open that your brain falls out. This product is so completely and utterly bullsh*t that I am ashamed that anyone here gives it any credibility.
I do hope that this thread is a lesson to the posters who give instant credibility to every Japanese enthusiast mod. Apparently they are falling for the same old scam that's been around since the 1960's.

twohoos, I say 99% because I learned a long time ago to "never say never". Sometimes things will surprise you.
Sunchild, one of the links provided is for a company in New York selling these systems. Personally, I could care less about filing a suit. If the consumer is gullible enough to fall for snake oil, then they fall for it. If someone buys the stuff then finds out its bogus, then a suit is in order.
However, the information presented on the websites of the numerous companies selling these things now is highly suspect.
First, they want us to believe that a non-powered system is capable of ionizing all the air molecules flowing through our intake system. They claim this is possible through the use of radium. If they truly use radium, anything more than a very small amount is dangerous. And a small amount being enough to ionize airflow of 250 cfm for our S2000s (or substanitally more for more powerful cars) is unlikely.
Secondly, they want us to believe that ionizing the exhaust gasses near the tips of our exhaust system will create a pull on exhaust gas further up stream, speeding along exhaust flow. Now we're talking about a flow volume at least an order of magnitude larger than the intake volume, yet the 'SEV' strips don't appear to be any larger or different. Furthermore, last I checked, a static ionizing field (whatever the source) will indeed create charged particles. However, for those particles to "pull" the upstream gasses, the gasses must have an opposing charge. So does that mean our exhaust gasses are already ionized? And if so, why not create a simple field to "pull" them out instead of changing their charge?
Make no mistake, ionization exists, and it can be used to move gasses. You've probably seen those ionic air filter systems, right? Well, the way they move gasses is akin to how you move a Maglev train. First the item to be moved has to be charged. Then you have to push it or pull it with identical or opposite charges. That doesn't appear to happen here.
Furthermore, assuming the SEV really does ionize intake gasses and split the O2 molecules, do you really want that? Unbonded oxygen is not a particularly friendly gas. It wants to react with something. And since your intake air is only about 1/4 oxygen, it's either going to rebond with other gas atoms/molecules or maybe it will choose to oxidize something else in your engine before it combusts.
But hey, ignore all that becuse who's to say I know anymore than any of the guys selling the stuff. But don't ignore this. Look at the three links I've posted. They are all dyno charts. They are all from a Dynopack dynamometer. They are all suspect. I have dozens of Dynopack sheets in front of me and they all look correct. These do not. Examine them and see if you can discern the problem. I'll be happy to explain it if no one else gets it (which is unlikely, its pretty obvious).

Items like this have been around for centuries. People want to believe in neat, "magical" items that will work wonders. And often times, these products have some small basis in valid theory. Take for example the Tornado intake air system. Turbulent mixtures are good things from a combustion standpoint, but expecting some airflow motion in front of the TB to have any real effect is unrealistic. Same thing with Slick50. We all know Teflon is slippery, but how do you get it to work inside an engine? And why don't our engine manufacturers coat them with it in the first place?
Someday these things could work with enough research and development, but the chances of that R&D taking place in a small company doing infomercials is small too.
Never say never, but don't be a sucker.

Hi Sunchild
It may be rude to challenge or ridicule certain irrational beliefs which folks may hold dear, especially in the domains of religion, politics and values.
However, to all who believe in Lysenko's version of evolution and genetics, I can say, you're all wrong. If anyone wants to dispute this conclusion, go ahead, I won't be insulted. To all of you who believe that the universe was created on September 7, 4004 BC, I can say, you're wrong. Come back at me if you want.
Similarly, to all those who are considering claims that automotive amulets and charms serve to ionize intake gasses, and who are willing to spend $750 for those charms, I say, don't do it, the claims are bogus! If I'm wrong, well, I had hoped to make it all the way through 2001 without error, but failed.
Sunchild, this is pure hokum, a radium impregnated band which ionizes the intake charge, really!!! Come on, you are one of the more rational folks on this board, why not laugh at this totally absurd claim which appears to be made in order to separate folks from a pile of their cash in return for ~25 cents worth of "rings."
Seriously folks, if you believe that the SEV system works, that's akin to believing in the tooth fairy. It's clear you have the right to believe in tooth fairies, and further to believe that they will make your car run faster, but prepare for some ribbing if you make that belief public.
In the long run, it may be that SEV rings will provide the basis for interstellar travel, mighty ships wearing the impregnated bands will wander star systems so remote that the feeble light from Sol will not be visible; SEV rings will serve as the basis of a new energy economy, providing for the silent separation of 02 into 0+0 plus release of the bonding energy in the form of a few photons, energy abundant and free for all ... that sure would make me wrong when I say this is unadulterated bullsht.
Just my 2 ergs.

Well I do believe that colder outside air via a CAI makes better HP..........and although I'd never use it I do believe a nitros shot causes higher combustion.......obviously air/fuel mixture has sensitivity and can be improved upon in different ways to become ideal. Now SEV? One avid supporter 1Randyc is confident there is something to it after experimenting with it, and others with no experience but combustion understanding say it's doubtful. Maybe it's just not being explained properly and later we might say, "well if you'd descibed it like that in the first place it would have been completely different" or maybe it will just be something attempted, failed, and let's move on to the next possibility. My remaining proven laundry list of 4.4 final gear ratios, Mugen ECU and a larger radiator doesn't leave me the finances to speculate and, if I did add it now my car changes so much every week I wouldn't know what caused what. I never received an e-mail back from Scott at King concerning SEV and I respect his opinion, and I have got 2 other e-mails from him about other things we're doing to the car. Maybe he thought I was kidding.

To paraphrase GW Bush, "this question needs more study."
Now, why would so many Japanese enthusiasts fall on their swords over this one? There must be a reason. I tend to doubt that it's mass stupidity or gullibility.
