It is reasonable to ask why anyone would want to change the S2000 shifter. Throws are short and positive. The only complaint I've had is that the shifter is not as positive as the shifters in a few other cars I've owned (in particular, my old Formula V had perfect feel in spite of the long linkage), and I really miss that positive feel in a car like the S2000, that is so right in so many other ways. I let Richard know early on that I wanted one of his shifters as soon as they became available. Last week I installed one of his preproduction shifters in my MY00 S2000, and it is all that I could possibly ask for.
Richard Paul described his short shifter to me as follows:
The difference between RP's shifter and the Voodoo knob is that one is a short shifter and the other is a countersunk shift knob. RP's shifter has a different geometry than the stock shifter, so the throws are 1" shorter than the stock shifter, even with the stock shift knob. Add a Voodoo knob on top of the short shifter and the shift throw will be even shorter. Also, the Voodoo knob leaves the rubber in the stock shifter so it's not going to provide the improved feel of the RP short shifter.
I'm on the way out the door to go install the supercharger but I'll try to get some pictures posted tonight. Once installed, the RP shifter looks just like the stock shifter, because the shifter itself is hidden under the stock leather shift boot.
I think Richard said the shifters would sell for $250.00.
I agree 100% with RED MX5. The RP shifter is a wonderful piece. I installed mine on Friday after completing an '04 transmission swap, and it is fantastic. With a voodoo knob, I can rest my arm on the center console and my hand naturally falls right on top of the knob. Here are a couple of pics:
i get it, we have to take the whole thing apart. 250 is pretty steep, but still interested. anyone near socal to give a test drive? is install difficult?
