To sell... or not to sell....
I have found myself in a situation where it might be better to sell my S2K MY00. I am in the military and I am stationed overseas in Italy. I don't make alot of money but enough to afford my s2k and the rediculous amount of money the insurance here costs. I am currently paying around 600 a month. I've decided to store it and drop the insurance on it and pick up a beater to drive while im here for atleast another 2 years. What im trying to get at is, would it be bas to store it for 2 years or more possably. Im not sure where im going next but there are places that i cant take my car. I want to keep her to myself but 2 or more years of storage is a long time. I was thinking if i sold it i could pick up another newer one down the road. I bought her for 10k about a year ago with 64k miles, Currently has about 67k miles. Im not sure what is up with KBB but it shows the value of my car at 17,500. Not really sure what shes worth. Just trying to get some toughts or ideas from others.

 

Econimically, if the cost of storage and your payments is more than you want or can afford, especially considering that you may not be able to drive her for 2 years or longer, then yes, sell her. Find her a good home with an S2K fan and it would be ok.

However, if you can afford storage and your payments and know that you still want an S2K in the future, then just keep her. There are plenty who store the S for long periods of time - it is not harmful as long as proper procedures are followed and proper care is taken throughout the storage timeframe.

 

2 years of not driving a car is a long time to pay to have something sit. Unless you love the car the $$ makes more sense to sell.

Doesn't cost anything to store in my garage. How much do you think it would be worth. It's in great shape. Clean with a painted eBay lip,3" Megan racing exhaust with test pipe and aftermarket head unit. I was thinking to try and sell for 14k. It's hard to believe kbb at 17.5

 

Too hard to answer. KBB says $17K you can always start there and take offers. Just because you put it up for sale doesn't mean you have to.

FYI in 09 I bought an 04 with 59K for $15.7K. I'm told the market has gone up, but I picked up another car for $5K less than KBB in 2011.

 

I paid $18k for my M00 back in 2005 with 7980 miles.

I suspect the KBB value for your car is slightly inflated

 

Factor in that your car may be increasing in value. At least not depreciating

 

If the garage storage is not a cost factor for you, put it in there for a short while while you are enlisted, and take it off of your insurance policy. Wait until you are out or can have the car where you are stationed, and can afford to drive it. Just about everyone who sells their S has regretted the move, and a lot have come back to buy another.

Since the S2000 isn't made any more, it will become harder and harder to find one that you would like, if you find yourself wanting another one. Two years (or ever 3, is not a long time, really. The S is such a special car that nothing comes close to replacing it.

 

Curious why Italy is so high? I was in Germany for 3yrs and insurance wasn't that bad if you went with a local company. Now my agent was just outside of post and only handled military. Personally I would keep it. The fun you can have on the roads there is well worth it to me. Not sure what rank you are but I was an e-4 over there and could have afforded it for sure if I had my S then. I traveled to north Italy when I was there and the mountain roads are awsome. Plus the beater would be good for winter driving since we all know this car sucks in winter. The only other thing I can think is to do is to get what you need to get done and promote. The extra money would help as well. Also try and live off of base pay and use the cola as extra. Trust me I know it's hard over there to do it but when there is a will there is a way. In the end if your tired of the car than nothing can help but to sell it. Hope this helps a little.
