Here's a diagram of what I'm talking about... I'm going to go by my local muffler shop and get an estimate... still undecided if I should do this.

Thats how the mitsubishi 3000gt is, dual tips out the back but only one is flowing exhaust.

i though u meant run a fake pipe up and leave the other muffler there. my bad. i dunno where you'd find room for a 'quite' muffler up in the mid section thouugh...

That's what I thought at first and it took me a couple of reads to figure it out (the diagram helped). Would there be any functionality to this without FI though?

I'm sure you could find a satisfactory muffler that would fit in that location. The old muffler on my GTI would definitely fit, albeit, not the correct pipe diameter.
