skip shifting the S2000?
I know that gas mileage is probably the last thing we bought the s2k to excel in.. however, I am curious.
In the z06, and the older z28s that I've owned, I've been able to get 2-3mpg more in city driving by skipping from 1st to 4th gear. I know this is due in part to the massive amounts of low end torque, thereby needing less fuel and rpms to get the car moving..
So I have to ask - has anyone seen any benefit in the S2000 by going from, say, 1st to 3rd, then to 5th and 6th?
It is terribly fun to wind the car out to 5-7k each gear and row through its excellent shifter, but sometimes I get lazy and just pop it into 6th to cruise around town in. Does this lug the motor if I run it at 2k rpms?
Sorry if this has been asked before! I am new to S2000s, and revvy 4 cylinder motors in general, but I am having a blast.

you probably could get better mileage by doing that, but all the savings will be negated by having to prematurely rebuild your transmission. skip shifting reeks havoc on your syncrho's. do a bit of searching around here and you'l be able to find a few threads discussing why this isnt good for our cars.
straight from the horses mouth.
be safe and enjoy!

something ive found people dont understand is that this motor was built for "high" revs. one thing to keep in mind, though, is that its all relative to each motor. whats "high" revs for one car (say 4k rpms in your z28) is basically the cruising range of an s2000.
just do what feels right to you, but keep in mind that this car was built to rev into the stratosphere and will last just as long as any other car, even if it doesnt rev as high. honda thoroughly tested this engine and built it to withstand the limits they've enforced on it. just as long as you keep uo the maintanance (oil level, tire pressures, basic stuff) and dont miss shift, you should be just fine.

Hey, another former camaro owner! whats up!
haha, skip shifting is alright, but ive noticed if you dont want to rev p the engine it seems to like shifting exactly at 2.5K. if you start off really slowly, the 2.5Krpm seems to make the next gear choice almost exactly @ the idle rpm of the next gear. I drive it like that til it warms up, before I wind her up.
also, like noted before...4 cyl vs. 8 cyl... our 5.7L V8 spinning at 2K is much more displacement moved than a 4 cyl spinning at 4Krpm.

Hey man! I've seen you post on this board, and I thought the same thing to myself: "hey, cool, another camaro owner who switched to an s2k!". You have to admit, people who go from a camaro to an s2000 is a rare breed, but you know what they say - great minds think alike!
That's awesome you had an LT1 SS - I like how they look and sound much better than the LS1 SSes. Very nice! I've owned a 95 z28 (hotcammed, headers, offroad ypipe, hooker exhaust, 1.6:1 RRs, heads milled .030" over, thinner impala head gaskets, cai, pcm tuning, 340rwhp), a 97 z28, and a 97 trans am, hehe. All 6 speeds, of course.
What made you switch to the s2000, if you don't mind me asking? How are you enjoying it? I definitely miss the sound of the v8, but man - the s2000 is a real hoot!
