May I suggest a used 748S. A lot more demanding bike, not a commuter but a lot of fun all the same. I personally really like the R6 nice combination of weight and balance still way to much speed for someone with my limited ability. I really miss my old cb450. Also I believe that they have a naked R-6 coming out in a little while similar to the FZR-1 that is based on the R-1 that might be even better.

invest in a good steering damper if you get the r6... a little twitchy in the front end those bikes.. had some close calls during wheelie landings when i had mine on my y2k gsxr 750 i could land with the wheel turned a little and still not get any head shake, but that bike came with a damper.... ah bikes I miss them ...
get the bike you'll have more fun with that then you will with the car

What are the pros and cons of a steering damper?

all that i'm gonna say is that i wish i had this dilemna. i voluntarily gave up motorcycles when i decided to get married. i didn't mind the risk when it was just me, but now....

the r6 is a beautiful machine. very well balanced and way more power than i could ever use on the street. my 2 cents is avoid the ducati. the duc is a beautiful piece of machinery but it's very likely to cost a whole lot more $ in the short and long term, even if you get a pristine used example.

the only other bike i'd seriously consider is the cbr600f4 or f4i. the r6 (IMO) is a bit more racey, but the CBR is more user friendly on a daily basis. depends on what you want.

jaynite,

Good call on the steering damper...it s/b considered mandatory equip. for anyone who rides their R6 (as well as other powerful, light, short wheelbase, steep head angle bikes) aggressively. I've had 3 Scotts dampers (1 of which is on my F4), and am very partial too them.

ace039,

Dampers stabilize the steering, preventing shakes, tankslappers, etc. that can be induced by wheelie landings and hard acceleration over rough pavement (esp. corner exits). They can literally save you from being tossed off the bike in extreme circumstances, and inspire greater confidence when riding aggressively. Only downsides I can think of are cost ($400 for Scotts, less for lesser options), and some people think it hurts low speed maneurability (IMO, this is mainly an issue w/ crap OEM nonadjustable dampers like the ones that come on GSXRs)

Da Hapa,

The F4 is admittedly a little more friendly for daily use, but not much. The R6 is surprisingly comfortable for such a small bike, much more so than the R1. The main problem I had w/ it was that it wanted to spend all it's time >10K rpm, which is asking for trouble on public streets. Otherwise, I had no problems w/ it for around town use. My F4 is great, but I'd happily trade for an R6 in comparable condition!

Bellevue,

Thanks for the complement. My bike is a '00 and the tail is an aftermarket eurotail, starting in '01 the R6 comes with LED tail lights from factory.
The bimmer is my M3 sedan. You can check out some pic of it here:

You're absolutely right, no mod can substitute the complimentary thrill of a bike, much less an R6. What year is that? Are those with the LED brake lights? And that BMW in the background looks nice too.

The 748 is more uncomfortable then the R6 it is slower but it has a lot more soul. I don't consider whelie possiblity in my buying decision. If it is just a for fun bike then I would get something rather exotic, and on a side note not many people can really out ride a R6 if you can then you should be getting paid to ride. The R6 has a real weight advantage though whicih makes it very nice for in town riding and would be my personal pick for a all around bike especially over the S2k modification Idea.
