Smarttire is a set of sensors mounted inside your wheels which transmit pressure and temperature.

In the cockpit you have a unit which receives this info and displays it.

Rick Hesel has it installed.

I hope the 'next generation' has a smaller display unit.

Rick and I both have the system. It's pricey (about $300) but quite amazing. Gives a constant reading of pressure and temperature and sets off an immediate alarm if anything is out of norm (you set the norms for the alarms). The signals are transmitted by sensors in the tires -- it's radio but not bluetooth

The next generation as we understand it has a smaller and different monitor read out.

Will we be able to use the new receiver with our current in-wheel transmitters? I am building my receiver into my visor (for space savings)...

Just curious...

I think so, but not sure. I'm going to check the Smartire web site or call them.

I checked the Smartire web site. The new system has a separate receiver and remote display, which will make for a smaller footprint for the display if you do a stealth mount of the receiver. Here's the link: http://www.smartire.com/fl/na/products/howitworks.html. I couldn't find any indication that the new system will work with the old sensors.

Any update on this new version? Do you know if this is now available?

I'm considering the this system but would rather get the new version. I tried tirerack a month ago, but they didn't have it at the time.

Damn! Sure sounds cool. And quite useful in a performance vehicle too.

I inquired with Tire Rack about the system last week and they were still vague about a release date--"Early September."

I resent the fact that they charge so much for the wheel sensors alone, so you might as well buy a complete set for both street and racing tires. Seems to me they could give us a break on the sensor price if we've already bought one system.
