smoking amber lenses instead of clearing them
That looks good....I think it looks better than clearing the factory lights. I haven't seen the amber piece out side of the lights what does it look like? I have seen spray tint at a hobby shop, would this work?
Paint cover (mind you it's not a color...it's a "cover") is called Outlaw Black made by ......
The reflector looks pretty much like how the second picture looks....it's that shiny when the lightbulb from the inside isn't on.
It took us about an hour to heat up the headlight, pull the headlight cover, replace the amber lense with a pre-painted orange, heat the assembly back up, and re-assemble the headlight.

Here's what you want to do for an easy and reversible customization:
Get some static cling tint for windows, cut pieces to fit the headlight housings and cover them up - from the outside.
A bunch of us here did this some months back with great results. If you search past threads you will find many posted pictures of the outcome. I haven't set up my photo album yet or I'd post a picture of mine.
IMO this looks and works great. I have 35% tint over the entire housing with an extra piece covering just the amber part. I used a squeegee and minimally soapy water for the application.
This tint has never come off on its own, no matter the weather conditions or speed travelled. No problems hand-washing my car either. Yet it peels off easily when needed.
Our headlights are so bright that the slight attenuation that results is just not that noticable for night driving.
PS: I also use the same static cling tint on my rear (plastic) window. It also looks great, has never come off, and as a benefit, protects the underlying plastic from scratches.
