Default Snapping sound near rear axle or diff!

I have started hearing a sort of 'snapping' sound when backing up, or starting forward. It seems to be coming from the rear axle or differential, or something back there. It actually sounds like it is related to the left rear wheel, but I can't tell since I am always IN the car when it makes the sound...

Has anyone else experienced this? What were the symptoms for the people with a broken diff?

Sure it's not your brakes sticking? It happens especially when they rust a bit after washing or driving through puddles.

Not to worry, Sparky, it's totally normal. When you release your e-brake, the pads sometimes stick to the rotors due to moisture, and pop loose when the car moves. However, I know it's pretty spooky the first time you hear it.

Are you sure it doesn't sound more like a loud "TICK" sound? I get the same thing - my dealer it going to fix it permanently this time. Last time he said something to the effect of it being a loose axle nut (?)

I will ask...

Hi all,

I've started hearing a loud metallic clunking sound when
I apply the brakes the while going in reverse after the car sits for a while. I can understand the concept of the moisture causing the problem after a car wash, but this happens every day, regardless of carwash or not. Dealer said it was normal for the brakes to "expand". It just doesn't sound very good and if there's a good permanent solution, let me know.

Same experience here. A noticeable click sound from the brakes, possibily not all the same brakes all the time. Might this be from any 'self adjusting' brake properties? I think some cars adjust brakes during back up brake application.

I've had this same noise for about a month, it is extremely irritating..... I'm reluctant to take it to the stealership. Has anyone actually found it to be the brakes, and fixed the problem? This is every time the car shifts weight, sometimes a nice 3 click salute when I leave from a stop...

I don't think it is coming from the brakes.

It is as PDX described, when the car shifts weight, but not always assocated with using the brakes. If I back up, never use brakes and start going forward in 1st, it clicks. It actually clicks when I start to back up, and when I start going forward. Usually after a few inches of travel, not immediately.

Besides, I'm in California. It's still kinda summer. The only puddles we have are from over-watering, and the car is generally garaged, so there is no moisture either. Bottom line, there is no way this can be related to moisture, and it is not related to the e-brake, as it happens every time the car shifts weight, not just after a prolonged stop.

1badride, I would describe it as a "TICK" sound... You already had this fixed once?

Snappy, I think we have different problems. Try doing a slow donut and listen for the clicking sounds... that might be a sign of differential problems. My "snapping" sound is definitely brake-related, although not to do with moisture (I'm in california as well). My snapping sound is only caused when I step on the brake pedal after the car has been sitting for a while. If I don't step on the brakes, no snapping sound.
