Soft-top DIY
I just did mine a couple weeks back and I can answer any questions you might have, so please ask away!
Regardless of your questions, here are my takeaways:
Regardless of your questions, here are my takeaways:
- I think most people over do it with interior removal... The roll hoops can stay in (that is if you can fit your head and an arm between them with the top half down). This will save you a bunch of time.
- Everyone seems to recommend cutting the old top, but remember you can't cut the new top to install it. Chew on that for a bit!
I didn't cut my old one because it seemed unnecessary to me. If you do decide to cut, as per other DIYs, watch what you're cutting! - Buy extra rivets. You'll botch at least one when doing the rain rail. I had to re-do 3 and the Robbins kit has 0 extras.
- If you don't have the Modifry top elastic fix, buy it and buy it now.
- You window seals will likely leak because they will not be in quite the same place. **** happens. Bring a screwdriver with you for the first few weeks in case you need to adjust the seal rails.
- And of course, take plenty of pictures so you can brag about it on here!
Yeah the Robbins top does, but it's the same narrow elastic that rivets into the frame bars. The Modifry elastic is, IMO, going to last much longer. Plus it's easy as pie to replace, should it wear out prematurely.
time for my top also. I have 8 rips in it that have fixed over the years, seems to rip easily now. But its lived its life in the sun, down when driving and up for weeks at a time while riding my motorcycle.
