Default Soft top fading? What can you do?

My soft top is not as dark as I would like it to be. I guess it faded because my last company didn't have a parking garage.

Anything I can do to make it darker? Any ideas? Would dye work?

Phantom,

You can try any of the vinyl cleaners like Lexol Vinylex, or the 303 stuff. That might help to get the color back.

I'm pretty sure the stuff called Black Again is used for tires only. I wouldn't put that on the top.

I would first clean it with the Porsche top cleaner, then give it a good coat of 303.

The reason for the Porsche cleaner is that it does such a better job than regular wash. I normally use P21S auto shampoo regularly on the top, and the Porsche stuff before I treat it with the 303. The Porsche stuff makes the top so much darker and cleaner looking than regular use of the P21S.

The 303 will further enhance the original black color. The finish should be an almost silky black.

I use Ragtop cleaner and sealer. Very pleased with the results. Don't know if it will restore the deep black color. Certainly has kept my top looking new. Year 2000, in the sun about two thirds
of the year.

Keep in mind it's not the color you need to restore but its' moisture. A dye would just cover up the real problem.

I'd give Meguairs #40 Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner or 303 Aerospace a try.

Meguiar's = http://www.meguiars.com/
303 = http://www.303-products.com/

Meguiar's you can find everywhere.
303 is harder to find. Try a boat supply shop.

Or search for a local 303 dealer here:

Here's a good post on cleaning the top from a while back, not sure it helps with the fading issue:

The up-side to the 303-protectant (they make a cleaner too) is that it has a UV protecant in it-- suntanlotion for your car. I think the SPF is something like 30 or 40... but I'm not sure.
