Reports say that the first thousand, 2006 Solstice's sold in minutes. How long before the roadways are filled with clueless, mis-informed Pontiac drivers trying to impress every other S2k, Boxster and Miata driver they see with The Big Three's latest answer to the sporty roadster?

Don't get me wrong, I actually like the styling and the fact that GM is trying something different for a change, it's not a bad looking car but I seriously wouldn't buy one. You just know it will be as big a disappointment performance-wise as the Cadillac Allante, even with the nice Aisin gearbox and will probably take a back seat to the Miata regardless of what supercharged version they end up offering. If the $34k S2000 is considered way underpriced and a steal in it's class, a $20k car from Pontiac will be just that, a $20k car from Pontiac, the company where the words 'driving' and 'excitement' have become profain language.

I just hope one of these over-excited Solstice drivers doesn't try sticking with me on a twisty, I'd hate to be the one to call the tow truck to pull him out of the ditch.

 

The real question how many of them will be recalled minutes/days/months after they are sold?

 

Okay...from pontiac's website:

"experience a hi-revving 2.4 liter Ecotec engine that delivers 177 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque"

Not exactly a screamer, but faster than a Miata...

Is it just me, or does it look like Pontiac is taking some styling cues from TVR?

Power...mebbe a factory super will make it more worth while.
Handling at .90 G's is not overly impressive.

Will be as common as the Miata...high sales means you'll see one in every American only-mid-life-crisis-50yr old-who-can't-afford-a-vette driveway.

 

I hope they do spectacularly well. I'd far prefer a proliferation of roadsters to the current SUV craze, or the 4-door attempt at a sports car idea. If GM gets the drivetrain right, they have a winner on their hands (especially with the Saturn Sky's styling). No need for some elitist, "my roadster is better than yours" sentiment here. I think it's great to see more options in the segment.

 

You forgot to mention the price, $20,000. That's a lot of car for 20K.

 

Well, I am glad to see Pontiac back into the market after the Fiero thing....I do like to see more options, and the solstice might fill whatever gap was left with the elimination of the MR2 Spyder.

 

I like the looks.. But there's that "B U G 3 " reliability issue.

As as a side note..
