Definitely has the clear coat. The S2K gets three trips through the paint booth:

1) Zinc Phosphate + Electrodeposition (i.e. undercoat)
- In the pretreatment process, the entire body is degreased, cleaned and coated with zinc phosphate by dipping. After the body has been cleaned by pure water, it is placed in an electrlyte bath of soluable primer (Cationic Electrodeposition) This produces a thorough corrosion inhibiting coating on the inner surface and corners of the body, pillars, sills, and panel joints. A chipping primer is then put over susceptible areas.

2) Chipping Primer + Intermediate coat
- The intermediate coat is applied to the prepared surface for further protection against damage.

3) Solid Color enamel + Clearcoat or
Metallic Enamel + Clearcoat or
Pearl Enamel + Clearcoat
- Enamel paint and either polyesther or acrylic resin paint are used in the top coat for higher solidity, smootheness, brightness and weather resistance.

rumor has it that the yellow is a 4 step paint color. Something like a coat of white followed by a coat of yellow followed by pearl followed by clear. I don't know if it's true but that's what a buddy was told by the paint shop where he ask to get his CRX in Spa Yellow (BTW, he picked a different color)

Should point out that the three step is on a new car......can't dip an old one. For a repaint it might take 4-6 steps depending on the finish your trying to achieve..........

Bob, I don't know what the original set up is but, supposedly, to achieve the same color later in life you got to do a silly little four step dance number of some sort. I don't think his steps are meant to compete with your chocolate dip routine (we're talking apples and bananas baby)

Original post is correct. Cationic (Ref: Helm Body Repair Manula Sction 5-2 "Paint")...and yes it would make a difference.
