I find that I am always messing with the radio volume between stop lights and high speed drving. I want to design a device with a small microphone which will automatically adjust the volume of the radio based on noise levels around the car.

In order to do this I need information regarding the remote volume control. I understand there is only one wire that controls the remote funtions (pin 3, green/red) to the head. Does anyone know the signal used on this wire to simulate a volume up or down command?

If you were to decide to change head units, look for ones by Pioneer with ASL (Automatic Sound Lowering, I think). It automatically decreases/increases the volume with the speed of the car. Neat feature, saves a lot of fumbling with the volume!

Additionally, Blaupunkt has the Casablanca, which taps into the car's Vehicle Speed Sensor. It sells for about $300 (**MUCH** less on eBay). They have also just released the San Francisco, which uses a microphone to control not only volume, but more importantly for a convertible, but to automatically adjust the 7band eq. It retails for about $400.

I found out about the SanFran in Crutchfield's new catalog. It isn't on theirs or Blau's US site, but it is on their German site (w/ English translation): http://www.blaupunkt.de/asp/index.asp?Spra...ic=SanFrancisco

Hey cthree--How 'bout an audio forum at the new place?

that would be real handy I too have thought about it.
They have had such devices on the cruiser bikes for a long time now.

Y2k,

I'm in the middle of rewriting my research code this weekend, but send me a reminder and I'll try and add the schematic to my webpage in the next few days.

That would be really neat if you could pull it off.

Someone built a "speed-o-sound" kit for Miata a number of years ago (it's no longer available) and I've had it on my 90 for about 8 years. Really great, even has a 2 position switch for top up or down. Hope you can come up with something for S2k.
