Speeding, test pipes, and morality
The issue of speeding sucks. Cars have drastically improved over the years yet posted speed limits rarely ever get increased due to the "common denominator." That's a whole other issue to tackle but...

This thread reveals a surprising amount of ignorance about the catalytic converter.
It has nothing to do with the ozone layer. It has nothing to do with long-term pollution or climate change. It's silly to say "the damage has already been done". The catalytic converter is mainly an anti-smog device. It helps with local, short-term air quality.
It has only a very small effect on performance and a very big effect on your contribution to smelly, smoggy air. Removing it is a very anti-social thing to do.
As for speeding, that can be more or less anti-social depending on how and where it is done.
But don't try to tell other people what they find satisfying. It's very egocentric to think that whatever you like, other people must like too.
By speeding you are increasing the risk to other people. By removing the cat you are harming their quality of life and health. Personally I think this is quite a bit more immoral than violating some of the stupid rules religions have, like honoring the sabbath day or praying to Mecca five times a day.

Water vapor is the byproduct of ANY combustion engine. amounts of Carbon, Hydrogen is stored in fuel form, and Oxygen, along with Nitrogen (70something percent of the atmosphere is nitrogen) is used to combust it, resulting in
C02/H20/N2 (if ideal) since its not ideal, C0 as well as N0x gasses are produced. Note that all the other gasses formed are also greenhouse gasses. The C0/N0x is converted in the cat converter, using platinum/precious metals as a catalyst. removing the cat just allows the Co/nOx to freely flow out.
Theres actually a LOT of debate about whats better, no catalytic convertor, or cat convertor. No one knows for sure/can say for sure what is better for the environment.
Go spend some time in Taipei, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, or any of a number of over-crowded Asian cities w/ weaker environmental controls, and maybe you'll appreciate catalytic convertors more.
I haven't read this whole thread...and i'm not going to....but based on the original post...we are being asked to compare apples to oranges. They only thing they have in common is that they're regulated by vehicle codes. The danger's, risks, and benefits are all completely different...so people's take on the issues of morality are going to differ by a wide margin.
Just seems like a useless discussion to me.
