Default Speedo vs. GPS and.....

Finally!

#1 - One of my colleagues brough his GPS/router to work so during lunch we went for a ride. He was calling the speed from his GPS and I was seeing EXCACTLY the same numbers on my speedo, at every speed we went, from 30 - 120 km/h. Pretty accurate.
Quote from that colleague : "I might sell my bike and get a S2000, WOW! this is great!"

#2 - Another colleague brought his MY01 MR2 to work, so after work we went for a top down ride.
After warming up we swapped cars. Let the fun begin!
What I noticed was that the MR2 has light steering, very direct, a bit more direct then my S2000, but a bit nervous.
The gearchange is not up to S2000 spec with the gearbox behind the seat. The rest was not bad at all .
His brakes weren't like mine, but that's a matter of pads/rotors I guess.
My colleague was impressed by the engine (duh ) and the gearbox (duh ), he found the S2000 less direct in steering but more stable or "planted" around faster corners.
(btw, did you guys know MR stands for "MidShip Runabout"? He opened the front to show where the radiator was and a plasic spare wheel cover had those words on it.)

This was the first time for me to see my S2000 in a rearview mirror and also to hear it roar!
I encouraged him to drive in front of me and "just step on it!".
Great sound!
But I think he didn't really get to 9000, being in another mans car.
I stayed well below 6000 in his. (6500 is redline I think).

lol because your speedo is accurate he's going to buy an s2k? by the way, most S2k's will be off anywhere from 0-3% or so. you just happen to be lucky.

Both are very fun cars to drive. The MR label has meant 'midship runabout' since the early 80's when it first came out. I love the steering in mid engine cars [true mid-engine]. One of the fastest cars [road racing and drag] is a 660whp 01 or 02 mr2 spyder. Runs low 9's on street tires and weighs about 2400lbs wet w/ driver.

The s2k and mr2 are actually fairly close in marketing and design principles, similar price range, both drop top, very reliable 4 cyl sports cars, excellent handling, etc.; yet are obviously very different.

s2k's speedo's are known to be very accurate compared to most which are about useless over 100, helps negate my dislike towards those digital gauges.

My speedo is off by about 1-2%. Not enough to see on the street, but at the ends of the straightaways on the track it becomes noticeable. Even at 120, 2% is only 2-3 mph indicated.

Of course, that all depends on tire rolling circumference, which varies.

More interesting is to see the time constants. My GPS datalogger has a faster time constant, which means that in a hard deceleration it keeps up with the actual speed better than the speedo does. The speedo is fast enough to mostly keep up with WOT acceleration, but hard braking is too fast.
