Speedometer error - Help needed
S2000 enthusiasts,
I've searched and there was only one post corresponding to this situation, but there were no replies.
Anyway, my S is only a weekend driver so I do not drive that much. The car should be in top shape given that every services were performed regularly.
My problem is that as I was driving last night I realized that "check engine" indicator was flashing. On top of that the speedometer numbers were no longer displaying smooth numbers. Instead, speedometer displayed choppy, square numbers. For example, "1" was displayed with straight block "l" symbol rather than trimmed corners, and rest of the numbers displayed similar symptoms.
Thanks in advance and any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

If your CEL is contiuously flashing, DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR. something is VERY wrong if the CEL just keeps flashing. you need to get the code pulled for the CEL. If the CEL is on solid, you can go to an auto zone or some place like that and they will usually let you pull the code with their tool. we can tell you what the code means.
if the CEL is flashing and does not stop flashing, then you need to get the car towed to a dealership.

Thanks so much for your insight Wisconsin S2k.
First of all, CEL is not flashing continuously (CEL is just on).
Also when I checked out the car today it turned out that the gas cap was not tightened completely. HOWEVER, this is the strange part. Because the last time I filled up two weeks ago I remember I've tightened the gas cap with several clicks. But when I checked today the gas cap was very loose (there are no signs of tampering. I keep the car in the garage all the time).
Is there any explanation as to how my gas cap has gotten loose over time? As I mentioned above I only drive S during the weekend.
Also, does loose gas cap can have related effect on the "choppy, squared" number on the speedometer?

The gas cap being loose and causing a CEL would not cause the speedo to act weird. something else may be going out. maybe burnt bulbs or some electrical thing?? i'd get it checked out.
but tighten the gas cap and pull the code. you really need to pull that code. if your gas cap is working itself loose, then you may need to get a new one.

You probably have a defective fuel filler tube. The threads are off, and over time the cap binds before it tightens properly. This happened to me. A new cap temporarily fixed the problem, only to come back a year later. This is a defect found on '02 and some '03 vehicles. There's a TSB for this problem - STB #04-002, and if you take it to the dealer, you may be able to get a new tube put in. I'm having my fuel filler tube replaced on Friday.
Is this only at high speed. I think Albert Einstein described this as time and length-dilation as you approach the speed of light. I haven't got any idea what is causing your speedo problem, but thought I would try to add a little humor anyway. Good Luck
