3 mins later at stop

10 mins later

zoom that image

something that i've noticed:
1. temperature outside effects this problem... hotter = more gaps
2. longer i drive = bigger the gaps
3. headlights on = lesser the gaps (night times are cooler here)

im going to another honda dealer tomorrow to hear their opinions on this.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK???

The second set look worse than the first one. It's the same problem and the second digit shows the problem as well as the rightmost.

update as of 7 jul 05.

yesterday i went to another dealer and dropped my car off for an inspection. today i called to check on its status and service rep told me that they could not duplicate this problem. i asked the service rep if i can go on a road test with him or the mechanic to identify the problem, but this guy stated "whether problem exist or not... we cant do anything for you." i went ... so i talked to another service rep and this guy was willing to help. he gave me service managers name and # and told me to call him tomorrow. in additon, he took my photos and receipts of previous repair attempt to give them to service manager. i hope i have a better day tomorrow and get this problem resolved.

oh yeah... after i heard "whether problem exist or not... we cant do anything for you" i called honda corp and complained like crazy. my case is reopened now and im expecting a call from honda corp... again.

base on my observation today... i think the HEAT is affecting my speedometer to act this way. i drove around 5pm, close to 100F, and problem existed however i drove around 9pm, when its cooler 85F, and problem disappeared.

anyone know what part of our vehicle is heat sensitive that is related to illumination of speedometer? i was told by my friend that LCD itself is heat sensitive. is that true?

Yes it is heat sensitive. Usually the black fades in really cold weather and gets darker in warmer weather. It updates slower too when it's cold.

My '03 doesn't do this in SoCal heat. I've been driving top-down for the past month or two and never saw anything like this.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I'm hitting this problem as well on my 2006 that I've only had for six months. I only started noticing it during my road trip down to San Francisco. Now it happens fairly consistently. Whenever I am on the road for 30+ minutes, I start getting these gaps. My temp gauge says it's only 52 degrees out so it's not like it's hot out or anything.

Here's a pic (sorry it's really blurry):

If you look at nrgizeman's pic, they look like they both are failing in the same spots. I took my car into the dealer yesterday for its first service and mentioned the problem, but they said they couldn't duplicate it after 40 minutes of driving. I'm bringing in both of these pictures to show the problem to them. Given that multiple people have hit this issue in multiple model years, I think there might be a defect in their speedo screens. I'm no expert, though. Hopefully Honda will give me a better response given this evidence.

Anyone have any advice or should I just keep pursuing it like I am?

A. what am i looking at that apparently isn't right?

B. if there is something so miniscule and "wrong" like this, i can't fathom why someone would want to go through the hassle of having it "fixed".

Simply because if it is a problem with the LCD splotching, these things tend to spread once they get started.

I'm still at a loss though as to what causes it. It seems to come and go from the descriptions - and I am not used to segments only partially working - they are usually an all-or-nothing affair.

I haven't noticed this in my car yet.
