Default Starter gone bad?

Ok so I have not been on S2Ki in ages...so be kind if this has been discussed before (although I did a search and could not find exactly the same problem being discussed).

I have a MY00 in relatively good condition, but when ever I start my car after it's been parked for a few days it sounds like the starter is sticking after the intial push of the engine start button. So I get that nasty sound, you know, like when you push the starter button when the engine is already running...

Anyway, can anyone give me an online diagnosis? Costs involved in fixing/replacing parts?

I've had that happen a couple times before, it's an odd occurance which sounds just like pressing the starter when the car is already running.

After that one kazoo sound and I cringe, I try it again and it starts right up... odd.

Kazoo, nice.

Typically that is starter related. The starter gear is not engaging correctly with the flywheel. I haven't heard any complaints about this on an S......usually just old chevys (haha).

Thanks for the welcome back...after a few dents and scratches, the ol' girl aint what she use to be (kinda like me), so I just don't have that itch to bask in the S2Ki glow like when my baby was shiny and new.

Anywho, onto that starter question...

At first, I would get that awful 'kazoo' noise after a good rain(?). Now it seems like everytime my car sits unused for more than a day, I get that unpleasant reminder my car is getting old.

I know what some might say..."Drive your car every day!" Well, I would, but I started a job this year that is a block away from my apartment and parking around here is stinky!

Any suggestions on my starter problem would help me out a great deal...

I have this exact same problem too, also on a my2000. It just started recently, once it got consistently cold outside, and only does it on the first start when the car sits for a day or two (I have an older Jeep I drive in bad weather). The noise lasts maybe 2 seconds.
Is it doing any damage to the engine? Can I let it go or should I get it repaired? And it seems like if it was the starter gear being out of sync with the flywheel that it would do it consistently. Thanks in advance.

there have been a few threads around over the years on a 'starter overrun' issue. I tried search but its apparently on holiday.

as it only happens on first start up when cold & with that only on occasion ... it is a difficult issue to replicate for service ...

I know exactly the sound you're referencing and its NOT TCT (Timing CHain tensioner) which is definitely a different ratcheting like sound...

for the starter overrun... the only work around I have heard short of starter service is to wait until all electronics etc settle in and then push the starter button...doesn't fix but you won't hear that sound ...

Well, it looks like a visit to the mechanic is in order - I hope it's not gonna be costly....

Now that the search function is working, I have seen alot more post on this. Example:

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.ph...ic=362056&st=0

I just came from the dealer and they recommended a complete starter replacement (@ $600 w/ parts and labor). They said they couldn't find anything from Honda or the internet on this subject. They said it would get progressively worse but I should wait until it goes completely kaput before replaceing it (?)

I'm not happy. Is that happening more and more with older S2000's? Is there a definitive answer, whether it be tensioner, starte, solenoid?

thanks
