how long in 4th before it popped?
maybe you had not fully engaged?
it is possible to think you are in gear, but not have not fully engaged. if this happens, it will pop out fairly quickly after you shift..

Not sure if it is 4th, but apparently some part in some transmissions was bent and they did issue a TSB for it. I think its the shift fork? (and that it could pop out in any gear)

Search for "gear pop-out". It's a relatively common problem on the S2K (esp. 4th gear), and easily fixed by your dealer.
