Due to the close proximity of the tranny and the cabin your just hearing all the mechanical stuff going on.

I hear a good amount of gear whine myself.

By the way do you hear it more when you deccelerate/let of the gas vs. taking off and accelerating?

Hey guys thanks for your quick replies.
Well I really hear the gear whine when I am cruising at a steady speed.. Keeping the rpm between 3-4k

Gear whine is usually (but not always) associated with rear diff issues. The whine should increase intensity with road speed. rpm should have little to do with it. If indeed, it is the rear diff, once you make the whine, push in the clutch, put in neutral and coast. Does it still whine? If it does, you may have just confirmed it. Have you had rear end work done lately? Try changing the diff fluid. This fluid change is WAY TOO under-rated by the owner's manual. I think it should be done after a few thousand miles and then annually.

xviper,

Could Honda be that insular re: diff oil change interval?

Does anyone know what the factory diff oil looks like when new?

Well, I feel that I should have changed mine out early. Those first few thousand miles are the worst on any new set of gears. When I changed mine out at the prescribed 1 year time frame, the fluid and the magnetic plug was THE filthiest and most grunged up of any of my subsequent changes. Now, whether or not such filthy fluid is a detriment to the diff is another story. Some say that it really doesn't matter how dirty that fluid is. I just didn't like the amount of "fuzzing" on that drain plug at the first change.
I also noted after my 4.44 gear swap, when I changed that fluid out after about a 1000 miles, it had some significantly larger metallic particles stuck to the plug. I don't know if this is a negative sign since the plug did its job, but with all the "so-called" reported "weak" diff issues, I'm happier in the knowledge that the diff fluid gets an early change the first time.
