Default Strap Buzz

Bought car in March - never (NEVER) drive with top up so toneau cover is on virtually 100% of the time. So I'm driving up Route 208 and I hear this buzzing sound. Slow down and it goes away. I'm reaching all over to see what I can touch to stop the sound - mesh in passenger headrest? passenger seat belt?

Finally figure out it's the passenger side strap for the toneau cover. So I put a rubber grommet on it - a grommet normally used for an electrical junction box to prevent frayed insulation. This seems to have solved the problem

Has anyone else dealt with this?

Yep, just twist the elastic strap once before attaching it. Problem solved. You'll probably only notice this noise without a passenger in the car. It's a weird aero thing that doesn't happen when there's a body there to change the airflow.

Best solution? Get a companion

^-- agreed.. give it 1 full turn before clipping on the elastic band.. I've been doing that for years now to my S2K's... problem is solved..and its not noticible..the twist I mean.

I didn't want to stretch the strap long term so avoided the twist thing - but yes that works.

Got the companion, then created three more companions, then original companion wanted a dog, so now I sometimes need to drive around companionless.

Thanks for the advice.

Silly question: Is the cover really needed? Have yet to use it....should I? Thanks.

I use mine because:

Looks good

Keeps dirt and crap off your top

Keeps the sun off your vinyl top, sun . . . bad

I don't use it if I know I'm going to be putting the top up and down a lot though, such as around town. On long drives, always.

Most people don't use it and a lot say it's a PITA. Takes me about a minute to put it on and off.

It doesn't stretch the strap that much at all so I wouldn't worry about it messing it up permanently.

Last year, someone posted a solution that I use. If you unscrew the snap on the elastic strap and screw it back on backwards (facing the opposite direction), then you have to twist the strap 1/2 turn to snap it on. This way, you don't have to twist the strap as much and you can't snap it on in a way that will make it buzz.

It works like a charm, and takes less than 5 minutes to do!
