i think that's just gears! Notice the losing car quickly catches up after 2nd...that's the affect gears get. You lose top end...gearing, not power.

Once again, I think!

that can't be just gears???!!
Yes, it can. Gears get you "out of the hole", however, up top, especially if you are a crappy shifter, the other guy will catch up (sooner if you can't shift worth a crap).

The explanation has been posted many times and it can be quite lengthy, so scanning the forums may be of some help to you.
But here's the gist of it:
"Gears" will allow the car to accelerate much quicker, but at the expense of a lower max speed in each gear. For example, 4.77 gears have been recorded to cut up to 0.5 seconds off 0 to 60 times. However, in the quarter mile, this 0.5 seconds is held and not reduced any further because of the extra shift involved. That extra shift eats up the benefit in acceleration in the next couple of gears.

Get two bikes and a friend who is about as proficient at cycling as you. Pick a comfortable gear to start off in and get your friend to go on that bike. You put your bike into the next lower gear. Now race. You'll get the jump and will most likely keep the lead through the first one or two gear changes but eventually, your friend will catch up to you.

The premise with "gears" in our car is that you can finish the 0 to 60 run and the 1/4 miles before the other guy catches up to you.

which is really cool because most of the driving we do is in that 0-60 or 0-100 range anyway!!!

I want some bad but supposedly it's a somewhat difficult install that would be pricey. I know I can't/won't do it.
