that's not your clutch, that's your vtec fluid at maximum potency

I agree that it's probably the clutch you're smelling. Although, I don't understand why that's coincident with your VTEC operation. It may indicate that you generally "ride" your clutch, which is definitely not a good idea in general, but particularly when your engine's giving you its best in VTEC.

Do you take your foot completely off the clutch pedal when you're in gear and accelerating? If you don't, you might be engaging the clutch just a little bit and causing slippage (and burn).

I should note that I've been trying to break in my ClutchMasters stage 1 replacement clutch for months now and I still get the burning smell despite the fact that I don't ride it. This clutch is just turning out not to be a good replacement for OEM, so I'm going to switch it out. But, my point was that it's possible you have a replacement clutch on your car (if you bought it used), and maybe that's just not fully broken in yet.

The only smells I get from driving are oil and rubber. If your practicing heal and toeing, then it could be some clutch wafting up too, but seeing as you own an AP1, its more than likely oil you smell.

lol Okay well it must be my clutch I just need to watch myself more carefully I guess. I would say oil but I'm never low on oil at all? Thanks for all the replies guys

it could be the smell of your clutch burning.

so i get this smell after driving my car to red line a couple times, a burning smell. i don't believe its breaks or anything like that and its very faint i can only smell it for about 10 seconds or so when stopped. i normally notice it when i get home and get out of the car to walk in the house. also my car burns hardly any oil... anyone else get this?? something to worry about?
It might be your clutch, but it could also be the brakes. After a few hard applications at speed the brakes will be hot and you can smell them. To determine whether it's the brakes or the clutch, try sniffing the wheels; If the smell is stronger there than it is under the car, then it's probably the brakes rather than the clutch.

Except for the brakes the car doesn't normally emit any odors other than the smell of the exhaust fumes.
