I ususally only smell the tires when I'm doing donuts or drifting.

To give you an idea, this was after pulling in to the lot at Deals Gap, NC if you know what I mean.

Yea, I think the only people who smell my tires during mountain runs are the people behind me.

I hardly doubt it's your clutch by the way you describe it. What you're smelling is probably the unburnt fuel that isn't caught by your cat.

It's unburnt fuel coming out through a hot cat. All cars make that smell driven hard.

Next time you drive your car hard, when you stop, smell around the car - tires, brakes, exhaust, where the hood meets the windshield, etc, and see what smells come from where.

I agree that it's probably the clutch you're smelling. Although, I don't understand why that's coincident with your VTEC operation.
If the clutch is on it's way out, living in VTEC land will cause the smell due to the forces of the engine. The smell is caused by slippage, when at high loads such as high rpm (especially in the higher gears) There is slippage to an extent depending on the condition of the clutch. When at higher loads, the slipping increases, thus F'ing up the clutch ever more.
