Default Tailgating

One of the most frightening things is to be driving at speed and the have the car (or pickup, suv, van)behind you tailgate. I hate this, especially in the S. I get especially nervous when they get so close that I can't see their license plate or headlights in my mirror. Here in New Jersey there is usually too much traffic to just zoom away.

I tap my brakes, turn on my lights, speed up (traffic permitting), and sometimes even slow down. Sometimes this works, usually it doesn't. Oftentimes I just can't seem to get the tailgater off of my tail.

What do you do?

I would let the tailgater pass me by changing lane.

I just slow down to a pace where they no longer feel comfortable following you.

I casually reach up and angle the rear-view mirror down so they know I can't see them any more, so there's no point them doing it any more.

drop it into 3rd (highway) or 2nd (surface roads) and leave those suckers behind.

it's also fun to slow down enough to make them pass (if possible); when they do pass, hammer it and teach them a little something about speed. (unless it's a Z06! ) and it's even more fun when they try to keep up with you

but there's only one explanation for tailgaters: you're driving too slow!

Brake check. Tap your brakes and they'll slow down a bit or back off. If they get closer, tap a little harder - they'll soon get the point. I had a guy all over the tail of my car one day (because I turned quickly and merged ahead of him on a road - he thought I should have let him go, I guess) so I just tapped once (he didn't back off), then tapped HARD and believe me, he backed off. He was mad, I could tell, but what can he do? If he hits you, it's his fault (for following too closely)... Idiots require a bit of aggression at times, though I think that changing lanes is best if it's possible (I was on a two lane road, one lane for each direction, so I couldn't change lanes without killing myself and someone else).

I'm thinking it may be time to invest in one of those programmable LED signs that you could perch behind your aeroscreen. Have a pre-programmed message to the effect of "Please don't follow so closely" or "If you can read this you are in my personal space" or "Shouldn't we at least have dinner first before you kiss my rear?". I don't think that anyone who's not from our area can fully appreciate how frustrating it is to drive in this part of NJ, and see SUV mom on our tail whilst yacking on her cell phone. I suppose the only peace of mind comes from the fact that if he/she hits you, by law it's all his/her fault.
