Tailgating
In my area on the freeway that I use to get to work every day, there is a group of drivers that get in the left lane on purpose to keep other drivers from exceeding the speed limit. There have been items on the TV news and newspapers and these people admit to blocking the left lane to keep the speed down on the freeway for their safety. What they don't realize is that a person that wants to speed is going to do it anyway, which causes tailgating, lane weaving and right lane passes. In my opinion, it is not the speed that causes accidents on a freeway, but the packs of cars side-by-side all traveling at the same speed because someone won't move out of the way. I like to zoom ahead of the packs and create some empty space around my car, and if I have to speed to do it then that is what I do. You should never drive in the left lane at the speed limit and think that is your right!

....I must admit that I did the "left lane" slow down on the PA turnpike for about 20 miles a few weeks ago... just to hold back a pushy b*tch in a Lexus who was trying to weave in-and-out.... and get ahead of everyone else

Agreed...letting them go seems to be the best thing to do. Traveling in packs is not wise, because if a situation arises where you need to get out of the way, it will be difficult to do so because there will be cars on all sides.
ScottH has the right idea - get empty space around you. This way, you've got somewhere to go if something bad happens (like the car next to you forgets to stay in his/her lane).

Which is why you just move out of the way and let them go. That way they won't be on your tail anymore.

How about this for "peev"?
I personally NEVER tailgate. So when I find myself on a freeway, and I have chosen to leave plenty of room between me and the car in front, when in darts a guy from another lane who effectively cuts me off. He takes away the "safe" zone I had established and forces me to back off once again to leave space between me and him!
I hate it when that happens.

I ignore the tailgater if I can. In my younger days I flipped the tailgater off if I perceived real danger in what they were doing. Although not the wisest thing to do it most cases it accomplished what I wanted. It probably made them think I was the wacko and so they backed off.
