Default Tear In My Rear Window

Out of no where a 2inch tear in my rear plastic window showed up. It does not appear to be a cut or any type of vandalism. It just seems to be from a crease that ripped. I took it to Honda and they told me it wasn't covered on my warranty at it would be like 1200 to fix. That it would take over 9 hours of labor. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and/or what you think about this.

Damn dude, that sucks. I would take it to a place that does custom convertable tops if you top is otherwise in good shape. They could probably just replace the window for you for way less money. Just call around...

see what other convertible car manufacturers are offering as a solution.. ie BMW, Porsche and Jaguar dealerships

shoemaker or tailor who can stitch it back together may do the job ?

You can buy just the rear plastic glass, I think its around $200 from Majestic Honda. It zippers in and bolts across the back, and can be changed pretty easily. You can also purchase a complete new top from several places on line. The best price I found was $390 from Cabrio World, and for $100 you can upgrade to canvas and get it in different colors.

regardless of the cost, Honda should still fix it under warranty......that's assuming your 3 yrs hasn't expired yet...that's what bumper to bumper means.

I think honda takes the postion of bumper to bumper as long as its not normal wear and tear. This means a large gray area of coverage and non coverage depending on different service departments and regional warrenty reps.

Somehow I don't think having a hole in your car is normal wear and tear. Brake pads, tires, clutches....maybe, but not a window.

Thanks for all the input. Ya I also think Honda should cover it, but they are standing strong and saying they wont. From what I have been told you can not just replace the window. The whole top has to be replaced, but that is just what they said then again they have never done a whole top or a rear window. I think I have to just get it done...

Back in August of 2001 when I had mine done, Honda sent out a new panel, the one you see "Don the Upholsterer" holding. Then, the instructions called for taking out the seats, taking out all the interior molding behind the seats, unriveting the old top. Then you remove the old top, unstitch the rear piece, stitch in the new rear piece and put everything back.

There are zippers on the panel near the plastic window, but those zippers are NOT for a quick and easy rear window replacement. I think they hold some protective piece for assembly or something. I'm really not sure what they are for, but the zippers are NOT for the nice and quick repair.

If you choose to go to a glass window (which is what I would do if the money came from my pocket) then you have to replace some of the frame too, I believe.
