theoretical mpg
sounds stupid, but imagine if honda had given us a larger 6th gear, one so that we could hwy cruise at 2k rpms or less. maybe some engineering guys can chime in to say if it would even be possible or not and if so, what would the theoretical hwy mpg be?

in my experience, it only bogs under 2k
the engine output at 2k isnt enough to overcome it. you'll probably need to keep the throttle wide open just to MAINTAIN a constant speed
everybody always asks why miata, integra, civic, etc engineers wont put a real tall final gear on their car to save on gas. simply, if it was feasible, it would have done.

theres a lot more air resistance at highway speeds than street speeds

I had a similar idea, like the OP, but this might be feasible.
It would probably take a lot of effort though. I thought about re-cutting the gears so you can get 4.77s but leave 6th gear alone (same ratio as stock) as a sort of overdrive gear.
That would really give the best of both worlds.

well, there was a guy who posted something about gas milage using lower shift points in a few experiments, and he concluded that if you shift early, you lose mpg. i'd expect honda wanted peak cruise efficiency in 6th at 65 or 70mph, and so you'd gain mpgs with a taller gear only if you cruise above the speed limit. (like me
)
that is assuming honda cared about mggs; alternatively, they could have tuned 6th for max top gear speed. however, this is a very green company, and they don't likely expect we care that much about the car topping out at 158 instead of 154.
