For a street car, what advantage does a set of coilovers have over a set of Koni yellows with springs?

are we talking in general? or for the s2000?

im really struggling to see what youre getting at here.

btw, please define "coilover".

its a generic term that usually can be assumed in context. but im afraid we've come to a point where definition is required, because technically, we all have coilovers designed from honda, meaning the coil spring is mounted over the shock.

Well we are on an S2k board, so lets stay with the S2k (I would certainly concede that coilovers, either corner balanced or not, on a Yugo would be an improvement).

Absolutely, we all ride on oem coilovers. But in todays slang, coilover has a specific conotation that I hope we all recognize as different from an oem shock/spring config.

So where am I going with this: What is the advantage of a coilover compared to an adj shock & spring? If tacking on $300 to optimize a set of $1500-$4000 coilovers is a waste on a street car, then is it likely that the coilover is a waste?

are you saying that spending $1500 on suspension is worthless unless you get corner balanced?

The question is: What is the advantage of a coilover compared to an adj shock & spring?

Oiy vey...

"Absolutely, we all ride on oem coilovers. But in todays slang, coilover has a specific conotation that I hope we all recognize as different from an oem shock/spring config."

How about saying that in today's slang a coilover has an infinite number of perch settings within a given range. An oem shock/spring configuration has finite perch settings without the use of shims (1 perch for stock shocks...2 for Koni yellows).

this is the last im going to say about "coilovers". here's 4 examples of coilovers. 3 of which fit in your vague description.

shock and spring.

shock and adjustable spring sleeve.

threaded body shock with adjustable spring

threaded body shock with adjustable spring and lower perch.

all are available. all have their advantages, and cost. (and sometimes rules)

however, i put more value in the quality of the individual part, especially the shock compenents. i wont make a blanket statement about "coilovers" as youve vaguely defined when there are examples of crappy "coilovers" from overseas with 32-way adjustment ™ that dont stand a lick to a decent shock and spring combo... corner balancing ability regardless.

back to the point of the thread. i dont think corner balancing is worth the money. care to disagree? fine. end of story. thanks.

Interesting thread. I always wanted to get "coil-overs" for my car, but after reading the thread it's really making me think about it.
