AaronS2K,

Holy Crap! I thought my tires were balding. Yep...I think I might go 255/35/18 also. The 245/35/18's sidewald bends in, even on my 8 1/2 inch rears. They must really bend in on your 9 inch rears.

By the way...how much more are the 255's compared with the 245's? I'm paying $218 for the 245's.

Unicorn,
The 255's were something like $10 more. I don't remember exactly but it was not a big differance.

why is any difference going to screw up ABS? Unless I read some very simplified explanations of ABS, it seems like as long as you have the same sizes in front and the same sizes in back, it shouldn't matter. If S2K is 4 sensor system, all the wheels can be braked independently by the ABS. ABS kicks in if impending lockup is sensed at a particular wheel. The way I understand the explanation is if one wheel is in impending lockup, it gets "ABSed", but none of the others.

sorry, I meant if the two front tires were equal to each other in diameter and the two rear tires were equal to each other in diameter (but fronts not equal to rears).

It's my understanding that if you have a 4 sensor ABS, wheels can be "ABSed" independently of each other. I don't understand why a difference between fronts and backs could "mess up" the ABS.

Oh, I found that "screwing up your gearing" thread - sounds like I need the minispares in back.

with the three channel system it compares front to back also

Its not like it wont work, but with a difference in size, say if the fronts are smaller, then when you are braking the computer thinks that your rears are going a little bit slower and stops the braking, only a slight change may screw with it.

RT I think the point is trying to find tires that will work together front and rear. I used a 225/50 front because they were within .1" of the rears. The other sizes available in the same tread were about .5" Too much in my opinion because if I do need the ABS I want it to work the best it can.

Never mind RT, I didnt read you post right

rocketman,

don't know about ABS, but just addressing the sizes,
I am kind of in the same boat as you.

I am currently running 225/35/18 in the front, and 255/35/18 in the rear.
My advice, DON'T GO WITH 225/35 in the front!!!
I bent both my rims(RacingHart C5) because there is simply no protection for the rim. The tire side wall is very small.
A friend of mine (S2K-F8) has 18's with 225/40's in the front, and it looks and protect much better.

I am also looking for tires, because they are pretty much worn, and I want good tires for Asheville.
I was thinking about the PP's, but as you have noticed, no 225/40's.

Looked at Yokohama AVS Sports, but they don't make a 255/35 for the rear. Only 265/35. Not sure if it will fit.

I surrender!

Seriously, thanks for all the posts in response to my original questions. I called a local tire dealer who luckily happened to have the technical knowledge to address this issue and he confirmed what you guys have been saying about ABS.

Looks like I will probably go with the TOYOs (225/40, 255/35).
