I feel your pain. My (first) engine blew. Tap tap tap.

I was far from home at the time and got a tow to the local dealer. Service manager told me there was no oil in the engine (just under 3000 on the ODO). It happened on a Saturday, so I had to sweat until the following Monday when AHM made the decision to give me a "one time courtesy replacement" of my short block. I never saw the warning light and experienced no noticeable change in performance - the car was driving fine and the next moment it was tapping and then it died. Honda gave me an extended warranty on the engine to 5 years and rented me a car for two weeks while they replaced the short block.

Good luck. Send me a message if I can be of assistance.

You all seem to be knowledgeable people on this board, so I would like to ask a couple of questions to you all:

1) I change my oil every 2k miles. Call me paranoid, will this reduce the likeliness of this #4 cylinder failure that has me currently wearing diapers?

2) Is there anyway to prevent this from happening? My car is only six weeks old with 2,200 miles on the clock. I still have time to correct any bad habits that I am forming.

Thanks in advance

I may have missed this if it was mentioned.

If you were doing parade laps weren't you VTECing the engine? If the oil is low Vtec won't engage. You might be able to use this when you talk to Honda.

nine grand,

IMO, changing the oil, per say, probably won't make any difference. Dirty oil hasn't been an issue. But changing it every 2k does naturally "top it up" which could make all the difference in the world. But who knows for sure . . . did low oil cause # 4 failure or did # 4 failure cause low oil. Only Honda knows (we hope) and they are not talking.

dlq04 has it right.

Check the oil at least every gasoline fill-up. Whether or not this will protect your engine, it will certainly protect your warranty. Losing an engine is an inconvenience. Losing warranty coverage for a lost engine is a BIG hole in your wallet.

There was a slight decrease in Vtec punch right before the car died. No check engine lights or strange sounds until the car was restarted.

dhoward, check your "pm".
Some states have a "Lemon Law" that protects the consumer if they get a defective new car. You might want to see if FL has this law. That might be a recourse if HONDA won't fix it under warranty.

WELL, EVER SINCE I FIRST HERD WORD OF THE S2000 I INSTENTLY FELL IN LOVE WITH IT!!!! WITH OUT EVEN SEEING A PICTURE OF IT.

BUT, NEWS OF THIS PROBLEM BEING A DEFECT IN THE CARS DESIGN, REALY BUMBS ME OUT... I AM NOT VERY OLD... BUT AM CAR CRAZY FOR KNOWLEDGE. I HAVE DONE ALOT OF REEDING ON NEW CARS... AND THEIR DEFECTS. I LOVE MY 2001 GRAND AM... AND THE CAR I AM WAITING TO GET IN THE SPRING (2002... S2000) I WAS GOING TO GET A CELICA... BUT THEIR MAIN (NEW CAR DESIGN) FLAW, IF YOU WANT TO CALL IT THAT, IS THEIR TRANSMISSION (BELIEVE IT OR NOT!!!)... S2000 IS MY STEPPING STONE TO RACING AND TUNING (BETTER THAN THE CELICA IN MY OPINION)

I HEARD THAT SOME OTHERS ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM AS WELL...........ABOUT HOW MANY OTHERS?>>>??>>>?...........

I HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN CAR COMPANIES HAVE PROBLENS
WITH THEIR DESIGNS... THAY TAKE THE TIME TO FIX IT.... BUT KEY WORD IS ............TIME...........

SO... IF ANY ONE KNOW IF THEIR ARE ALOT OF OTHER PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH THIS PROBLEM... PLEASE LET ME KNOW

I DON'T WANT MY S2000 TO TURN INO A CELICA....

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROBLEM... HOPE THAT HONDA TAKES THE BLAME FOR SOMETHING THAT IS OBVIOUSLY THEIR THEIR PROB......

KEEP US POSTED......!
