well, guess what happened to me when i lowered my top down yesturday, after driving with the heater on for 4 hours, outside temp around 40. my rear window cracked right in the middle....wtf. sweet, now i have to have Honda warranty it. and they better....i didnt buy the extended warranty for nothing.

and ive lowered the top in like 20 degree weather without a problem. so im really pissed off right now. because for one, they sold it to me with a rip already in the top.

Solar - I'm sorry to hear. Plastic or glass window?

I am driving with the top down for a specific reason - here in metro Detroit we have lots of bad roads, and I find that the top creaks a whole lot while it's up. On top of that, it traps engine noise within the cabin, as we all know. I genuinely find driving with the top down more pleasant for these reasons, even if it's 20F outside. It's not about wanting attention, although that has its place

The thing about the S is that with the high waistline (F1 cockpit), you're pretty well protected in there.

If people think driving in the cold with the top down is a bit enthusiastic I wonder what they'd make of a guy who posted a request for a 2nd hand ECU to one of the Miata forums ages back.

Turns out his had rusted because of his habit of driving around the city with the top down in the pouring rain and using an umbrella to keep dry at stop lights (the old Miata ECUs were apparently under the passenger side carpet, if I remember his story... was ages ago).

Man, those are fancy hats. But, you're right, keeping the ears warm is the key to driving with the top down in the cold. I still remember one time driving with my wife with the top down in freezing weather. We needed to improvise so we were both wearing the heavy green cloth helmets that welder's wear (cheap). We pulled into a town, stopped at a red light, and bus load of kids pulled up beside us. They were laughing so hard at us, and we were laughing so hard with them, we had tears in ours eyes.

Man, I'm getting chilled just reading this thread. Actually, I'm from Massachusetts and can remember some real cold ass winters. Since living in Florida for the last 15 years, I do get home sick one in a while. I simply stick my head in the freezer and look around...that cures me for a while. The difference here is...I keep the top down in the winter and up in the summer. LOL
